Two senior military figures sacked and both in charge of nuclear weapons

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24499310

On Wednesday the Navy announced that Vice-Adm Tim Giardina had been removed as second-in-command of US Strategic Command.

The Air Force said Maj Gen Michael Carey's removal was for "behaviour during a temporary duty assignment".

The Admiral was a gambler, but the other guy is more mysterious....

Major General Carey may well have been getting publicly drunk while TAD (and maybe on the job, too). He was cited for PERSONAL improprieties that didn't involve a lot of stuff, so there ain't much left! Now, as we all know, alcoholism is an illness, even while it's inappropriate for someone to be getting loaded, so that's my guess. Who knows, though? Whatever he was doing, it was "inappropriate" but not sexual and not illegal.

Air Force officials said Maj. Gen. Michael Carey was fired for “personal misbehavior” while on temporary duty at an unspecified location outside his usual command. The officials would not describe the behavior, other than to say that it did not involve any sexual improprieties, drug use, gambling, or criminal conduct.

....An Air Force statement said that Carey was relieved from command “due to a loss of trust and confidence in his leadership and judgment.” The statement goes on to say that “the allegations are not related to operational readiness, inspection results, nor do they involve sexual misconduct.”
Gen. James Kowalski, the commander of the Air Force Global Strike Command, made the decision to relieve Carey of his command. The firing came after a months-long investigation by the Air Force Inspector General into reports of personal misbehavior by the major general. A separate Air Force investigation into Carey continues, and will determine whether he should be disciplined or forced out of the service. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/11/20922413-air-force-general-in-charge-of-nuclear-weapons-removed-for-lack-of-trust-defense-officials?lite

The MG might as well leave--he's already maxed out his retirement pay.

It's an illness. It's an illness that is incompatible with military service, particularly at those levels of responsibility.

I don't know, though--don't know anyone who runs in his circles either, anymore. I would bet it will come out, in time.....

McChrystal was downright disrespectful about his superiors, the POTUS and the VPOTUS. If they wanted to bring him up on charges, they had enough to go on, thanks to that RS article by Hastings.

They've gone out of their way to say this guy doesn't have any "chargeable" crimes, so all I can think of is alcoholism or mental illness. Either is incompatible with continued military service in the sensitive assignment he once held, but neither is his "fault." Since there's no wrongdoing, he can retire at the highest rank he held, and go on to do other things/get the help he needs.
