These moronic hunters actually shot and killed a rare albino moose

My, don't they look proud. But after shooting this rare albino moose near Belle Cote in Nova Scotia last week — and posting the pics to social media — the trio has sparked considerable outrage, particularly among the region's Mi'kmaq indigenous community.

This moose was known to the local Mi'kmaq people for years, but they refrained from killing it because they consider all white animals to be sacred — what they call a "spirit animal." Even hunters, aside from these clowns, don't shoot albino animals for fear that it'll bring bad luck — and despite the fact that it's not illegal. These guys breached a kind of unwritten code of conduct that has also upset many in the hunting community.

<snip>

the pics at the link will break your heart. Many years ago I had the great good fortune to see a huge albino moose. One of the most breath taking sights you can imagine. Anyway, hunting moose is no sport at all. they just stand there.

Anyone who takes glee in killing is SICK. On my Mom's rural place in Ohio, I can't tell you how many times we have found entire deer carcasses dumped with just the racks cut off. There is a special place in hell for this type of "hunter".

In Nova Scotia there is a lottery type draw and some people wait upwards of 20 years to get picked to go moose hunting. It is the same in New Brunswick and my cousin waited over 20 years to get picked to be able to hunt moose for 3 days. People put a lot of money into moose hunting for a very short season and there is no law against shooting a white, purple or brown moose.

They killed it because it was moose season and it was a moose. I don't have time to explain the moose hunting regulations in Nova Scotia, but you have to get picked, sometimes it takes a very long time to get picked. You only get a short 5 day season to get your moose in certain zones. These guys Might have waited a long time to even get a chance to shoot a moose. If there was a white moose and a regular moose in the same place and they shot the white one because it was cool, then maybe I'd have I a little sympathy for the moose since it is a rare occurrence. I have seen an albino calf moose one time and 2 albino white tailed deer.

Is that moose hunting is a big deal in the NB and NS. People eat and share the meat they get from hunting moose with friends and family that can't go, or never got the chance. I don't know, or care, where you live, but the people around here, especially the mi'kmaq hunt all the time and they share their food. It's not killing just because you can.

In this instance, it WAS killing because they could. There was no NEED for it, they did it because they could. And they sure looked proud in those pictures, too. At least they have the decency to apologize and at least try to show regret. More than I can say for some.

Of hunters with their big game that didn't look happy about it? They will be able to share their meat with friends and family. It's really too bad that people can't even enjoy a legal activity, sometimes only a handful of times in their lifetime without being called assholes for it.

In a province with a large moose population, so yeah, I think I do know a little bit about moose, how they act, especially during the rutting season, when hunting begins. Sometimes they just stand there in the road and get shot, sure, but not typically. You can make them stop if they are moving by doing a grunt or female call and take your shot sometimes. Most of the time they are gone before you have us chance to aim at them.

I don't see how they acted irresponsibly in shooting the moose, just because it was white...

Hunters get an extremely rare chance to hunt a moose and the moose they see is an extremely rare moose. And the moose is extremely rare because walking around like a white flag is an extremely good way to betray your location to predators, which would endanger the viability of the species. Shooting the moose will not diminish the overall moose population because hunting them is an artificially rare occurrence, and shooting an albino moose is an artificially rare occurrence among a group of people who hunt moose for sustenance.

On balance I wouldn't shoot the moose although I would be sorely tempted to do so. Not because shooting moose is wrong. I have canine teeth and binocular vision. But it seems less than sporting to shoot something that had it's natural defensive capability compromised, an attitude which I suspect, at least in part, underlies the Mi'kmaq custom of leaving it alone.

It would be more civilized to respect the traditions of the Mi'kmaq and an awareness of an especially rare event. The issue here is not killing of a moose, but a violation of taboos, and if you aren't starving it would be better to take the story of how you waited years to shoot at a moose only to be presented with an even more rare opportunity to see a rare animal on that rare occasion. It keeps you from having the memory of the event be an embarrassing apology instead of moment of transcendence.
