work has been rough. it ain't easy making a living in a foreign country when you go there with nothing. but things are moving along.

(8,694 posts)If drug companies could patent aspirin, it would probably cost $100 per tablet. It's from the bark and trees of the willow tree. Known by indigenous people for a long time.
Same for digitalis, aka Lanoxin, comes from the foxglove plant.

(3,286 posts)Aside from the fact that it clearly illustrates the efficacy of other ways of treating illness, it also most clearly, illustrates the sham that is our own free market system.
That there are "natural" medicines has never been a secret, even to the esteemed scientific/pharmaceutical industries who have often used "natural" ingredients in their patented medicines. Only in a culture that considers HEALTH a free-market commodity, instead of a HUMAN RIGHT would the secrets of the rain forest medicines be unknown to the majority of people.
And the entire HEALTH INDUSTRY exists because they say, and most people believe them, that there is no such thing as a NATURAL cure.

health care as a for-profit business truly is a sham. an insurance company's directive is to deny claims in order to be profitable and satisfy the shareholders. drug companies make expensive medicines that mask the real problem and only treat symptoms. nowadays, it seems that doctors do nothing more than prescribe pharmaceuticals while pretending that environment, diet and lifestyle have little or no effect on our health and well-being. where is the health care in all of this? it seems to take a back seat to the business of making money. the system is broken.
there's no doubt that there are countless compounds found within the incredible diversity of plants in the rain forest that have profound and positive effects on our bodies. This shouldn't be surprising as we have evolved alongside these plants for millions of years. We need to stop destroying the rain forest and collaborate with the few remaining indigenous communities living along the equator all around the globe to gain as much knowledge as possible.
but, i also took something else away from this film. the indigenous people in the film used ayahuasca and san pedro cactus (and, probably, other psychotropics) as a large part of their treatments. i think that they understand, probably more than we ever have, that it is our own minds that have the most control of our bodies, and therefore, are an integral part of our own healing.
