I was only pregnant once and have been paying these premiums for almost 30 years.
Woe is me!
I only needed it for 9 months out of 360 months. I demand a refund! Damn that system.
If I see one more guy moan about having to pay insurance premiums for maternity, due to a new law that makes it more fair, I'm gonna flip!

These whiney assed girly men make me ill. I paid the higher FEMALE rates for decades and never once had a "female problem" that needed any medical attention. They can cry me a fucking river.
Correction: I went in every fucking year for my annual gyn exam and pap smear (and later, mammograms) NONE OF WHICH WERE EVER COVERED.
ETA: So, I am 56 and EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DIME OF FEMALE MEDICAL CARE I HAVE RECEIVED I PAID FOR OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. In spite of paying for a FEMALE policy.
Cry me a DOZEN fucking rivers.

(23,720 posts)Yes, they'll never file a claim for giving birth. But I can't help but wonder how many women that they'll have unprotected sex with that will.
So guys, consider it the price you have to pay for cheap meaningless sex with women you have no good intentions for.

(115,706 posts)And never complained about it, either? I'm never going to get it, but my dad did (and was treated and recovered). And we were very glad he had insurance to cover that treatment. The men who gripe about maternity coverage? Maybe someday they will be married and have children; wouldn't it be nice if they had reasonably-priced insurance for the birth of their children? And even if that never happens, they should consider that there will be millions of women out there helping to cover the cost of their possible prostate cancer treatment.
The point is, insurance works only if there are enough healthy people in the pool to cover the costs when some people get sick (or have babies).

(14,337 posts)Or Viagra? Insurance pays for those. Some even pay for vasectomies. EVERYONE shares in everybody else's costs.

(22,000 posts)It is a form of birth control. Men who are serious about not having kids or maybe are married and they and their spouse don't want any more should be able to get one. Compared to the cost and risks of a woman getting her tubes tied, a vasectomy is a very easy process.

(108,978 posts)We all use health care and we're all at risk. It evens out in the end.

(22,000 posts)I agree with you the risk has to be spread for different types of coverage. At the same time I do think employers and insurance companies should start to offer men paternity leave. The husband/father should be there to help and bond with the child too. Granted they don't need as much time as the wife/mother, but they should have some time to be there.

(36,221 posts)Most pay for a separate disability policy that guarantees a certain percentage of pay for a set period of time.
I do wish men had more options, because I think it is very healthy for the family unit.

(22,000 posts)That is ridiculous. It's like calling a janitor who screws in a light-bulb an electrician.
If it ever happens I guess it will be up to either the state or federal government to improve the options.

(36,221 posts)It's the smart thing to do. It also covers for accidents or other reasons you may not be able to work, and have doctors orders.

(90,704 posts)... to believe there is such a thing as a risk pool of Human Beings. Stupid, selfish, boneheaded, shortsighted -- oops, did I say that with my "out loud voice"? I mean: Poor things, they just need to be educated that women are people, my friends, and they need to have their hurt feelings soothed.
