... On Wednesday, The Providence Journal -- and a number of other media outlets around the country -- published a story that said the car-sized robot had been placed in hibernation because of the government shutdown.
Not so, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory spokesman said Monday. Although NASA has furloughed 97 percent of its personnel, NASA doesn't operate the rover. JPL does, under contract with NASA, said Guy Webster.
"The person at NASA who put out that story might not have had complete information," Webster said. He added that the error was picked up by other science writers around the country.
Adding to the confusion, NASA closed down its website right after offering the erroneous information, so the tale was uncheckable after some insiders noticed that the stories were incorrect ...
