Land of the not so free and the not so brave.
A 28-year-old woman goes to a doctor seeking prenatal care for her (wanted) pregnancy. During the appointment she discusses with the doctor that she has had an addiction problem with prescription painkillers, but that she is confident that with the incentive of the wanted pregnancy she will be able to stay off the drugs. What happens next is mind boggling.
Should Pregnant Drug Users Be Treated Like Criminals?

The doctor notified the authorities and the prospective mother has been locked up for the duration of her pregnancy under Wisconsin's 'a fetus is a person from the moment of conception' law. The fetus has more rights than the mother.
<sigh>

(13,466 posts)I had one of them claim to me that they did not seek to control women's health care choices, well if a woman can't discuss her health with her Doctor without becoming a criminal they have done nothing but control a woman's health care choices. In some cases she has the choice of jail or being honest with her doctor.
I really hate the Christo-ban.

A woman's body is her own. Full stop.

I agree, this is absolutely not the way to deal with this situation.

(47,209 posts)incarcerate the Mom. That would make her (or any of us) want to do drugs even more. And yeah, you can get them in jail.

(6,342 posts)Mental health and addiction assistance in this nation is a disgrace. It has been for many years. No one wants to fund those kind of assistance programs. So the only thing the government knows how to do is throw people in a cell. And America doesn't have a problem with that because we are a country that LOVES it's prisons. We got more than anyone else in the world and more people in them than anyone else in the world.
Many people are making a lot of money on the war on drugs. It's turned our justice system into a profitable industry of its own.

(12,665 posts)That is mind blowing to me. They are treating this woman like an animal over nothing more than a bunch of cells.

(47,209 posts)more unhealthy pregnancies than it will ever "help" with incarceration. But, as long as they get to bust a woman or two.
ScreamingMeemie
(68,918 posts)I would let her know her options. I would offer (note the word here is offer) to assist her in detox. If that didn't work, I would let her go. That's all you can and should be allowed to do.
If she refuses, she refuses. She is in charge of her own body.

As for your question, it is her risk to take. Physicians advise, they don't imprison. (Unless you're a pregnant woman, apparently, then all bets are off.)
