How do we allow this to happen? Pregnant woman detained for duration.

Land of the not so free and the not so brave.

A 28-year-old woman goes to a doctor seeking prenatal care for her (wanted) pregnancy. During the appointment she discusses with the doctor that she has had an addiction problem with prescription painkillers, but that she is confident that with the incentive of the wanted pregnancy she will be able to stay off the drugs. What happens next is mind boggling.

Should Pregnant Drug Users Be Treated Like Criminals?

The doctor notified the authorities and the prospective mother has been locked up for the duration of her pregnancy under Wisconsin's 'a fetus is a person from the moment of conception' law. The fetus has more rights than the mother.

I had one of them claim to me that they did not seek to control women's health care choices, well if a woman can't discuss her health with her Doctor without becoming a criminal they have done nothing but control a woman's health care choices. In some cases she has the choice of jail or being honest with her doctor.

I really hate the Christo-ban.

Over the past couple years I have learned that you need to be careful what you say even to a doctor or psychiatrist. One wrong word can seriously mess up your life.

incarcerate the Mom. That would make her (or any of us) want to do drugs even more. And yeah, you can get them in jail.

Mental health and addiction assistance in this nation is a disgrace. It has been for many years. No one wants to fund those kind of assistance programs. So the only thing the government knows how to do is throw people in a cell. And America doesn't have a problem with that because we are a country that LOVES it's prisons. We got more than anyone else in the world and more people in them than anyone else in the world.

Many people are making a lot of money on the war on drugs. It's turned our justice system into a profitable industry of its own.

I'm not defending her being arrested, but if she refused to be hospitalized for a very tightly controlled detox and said she wanted to continue the pregnancy, what would you do?

I would let her know her options. I would offer (note the word here is offer) to assist her in detox. If that didn't work, I would let her go. That's all you can and should be allowed to do.

If she refuses, she refuses. She is in charge of her own body.

Just curious.

As for your question, it is her risk to take. Physicians advise, they don't imprison. (Unless you're a pregnant woman, apparently, then all bets are off.)
