General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've been doing a little research into who is behind this so-called truckers strike coming up....
and if it wasn't clear already, it is being promoted by a couple ...well...nut cases.
Actually, the WORST kind of nutcases; the type who think they are the ONLY sane ones in the room.
Person #1 - Pete Santilli.
Mr. Santilli is a talk radio type who says he owns "The Guerrilla Media Network" and "broadcasts" on the same.
From his "Who am I" page;
The next sentence begins "If all sounds crazy to you..." . Yeah, Mr. Santilli. It does.
I am listening to him as I type this and, much like many other wing nut talk radio personalities, he sounds rational enough, calm enough etc., and his info page is sprinkled with just enough logic and truth as to make him seem believable, but his message is libertarian at the very least, pro-gun to the max and is, to quote another source, a "Tea Baggers wet dream". He is simply tilting at the wrong damned windmills. Convinced as he is that the President needs to be impeached, (He just used the dog-whistle moniker of calling the President "Barack Hussein Obama" he is aiming his concern at the wrong spot. He wants this dopey "Ride for the Constitution" to start in Gilberton, PA because he apparently thinks that asshole Sheriff (Mark Kessler) up there who got fired by the city council is some sort of hero. Kessler, BTW has his own website now and still calls himself "Chief".
There is a reason you and I have never heard of Pete Santilli. He's a nitwit pissant that is out of his mind. I would LOVE to have the chance to talk on his show but there is no way he would allow an intelligent, articulate, LIBERAL truck driver to speak more than a paragraph.
One upside - he is currently talking BAD about Rand Paul. So at least he sees that dope for what he is.
The website Mexico Trucker Online has a good write up about him, exposing him for what he is.
Person #2 - Zeeda Andrews
Another nobody you and I have never heard of who claims to be a "former country singer". Hmmmm....
No Wiki entry on her at all, but she does have a FaceBook page. The "Groups" section is filled with serious right wing Christian, conservative and pro gun links and apparently her favorite authors include Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Sarah Palin and Ron Paul! An obvious genius as well as a deep and critical thinker.
For some reason she was mentioned in a US News and World Report article as one of the organizers of this stupid truckers protest.
Mexico Trucker has a good write up on her as well, calling her "a washed up, never was country music singer, who claims to be a former trucker, a claim that has since been debunked, is simply someone relishing her 15 minutes of fame which will soon be extinguished."
Another person mentioned in the above US News article is...
Person #3 - Earl Conlon.
Earl is a truck driver from Georgia. He claims on his FaceBook "About" page that he is an Owner Operator, but he admitted on this recorded phone call that he is a "Company Driver" (meaning he doesn't own the truck he drives) and is NOT EVEN GOING TO ATTEND this protest. His FaceBook page is typical of right-wing low information voters who think the President is the anti christ blah blah blah, blaming everyone and everything EXCEPT the correct things for his lot in life and what he sees as the imminent collapse of this country.
Another funny thing I learned is that Conlon was going to use the Travel Centers of America Truck Stop in Ashland, Virginia as a staging point. A Spokesman for the TA Corporate offices told the mainstream trucker publication "Overdrive" that no rally will take place at the Ashland facility and they must find another place for their little get together. LOL!! (Look down about the middle of that page for the quote)
Here is the story from the website Raw Story;

As much hype as this has been getting, not only on DU but by a major outlet like US News and World Report, it is clear that this will go precisely NOWHERE. While many millions of truckers do indeed qualify as Low Information Voter types, the vast majority won't give this nonsense a second thought. I should also note that despite some DU'ers and others impressions that the majority of truckers in this country are either union members or owner operators or both, I assure you, as someone who has been a trucker all my adult life, that NEITHER is the case. The vast majority of truck drivers in the US are company drivers. They go when and where they are told and haul what they are told. Damned few will have the freedom, much less the inclination to go spend a day or two on the DC beltway.
It is a fantasy put up by a couple nitwits on the fringe.
Let's see what happens if they get a few dozen truckers to do a rolling traffic jam or whatever on a holiday weekend.
Oh! I can see into the future and I already know!
DIDDLY SQUAT.

(14,459 posts)The first section is entirely funny. How is it that they can take the same facts as we see and run entirely the wrong direction with them?

(37,160 posts)It would mean rethinking comfortable thought patterns/prejudices; "training" in certain modes of thought and bad habits and simply shifting the direction of them (think David Horowitz, who grew up "red diaper" radical left and shifted to radical right); etc.

Ed Schultz is talking about this now.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,370 posts)I have a problem with him insinuating this is more than I have found it out to be, meaning a movement by a larger group, as opposed to the 3 players I named above.
I just hope his producers have done at least as much research as I did today. He did have a pic and quote of that Earl Conlon person on! Too funny.
Conlon's life is going to be a living hell for a while! Good.
