As the Republican Party lurches toward Whig status and some Republicans have begun jumping ship Irish Central has reported that Congressman Peter King (AC-NY) is threatening to join the Democratic Party.
I am enjoying the infighting within the Republican Party and am pleased when they leave and become independents. But Peter King can rot. He is someone the Party doesn't need. His imbecilic behavior in congress is part of the reason that congress is so dysfunctional in the first place.
If you can stomach the fawning story at IOrish Central here's the link

(25,249 posts)think of the impact this highly visible Repug would have on voters in the Repug Party if he did make the switch. It would really set them a thinking. I wonder how Fox would protray his switching. They would be flummoxed.
Though I share your feelings on Peter King - having him switch over to the Dems would really send a message and maybe encourage other Moderate Repugs to jump ship as well.

(43,049 posts)he's kinda lonely being the only one on Long Island and getting regularly dissed and embarrassed by his neolithic colleagues. Grimm, the other R, is from Staten Island and may be thinking similarly.
I'd rather we beat King fair & square at the polls and put in one of ours, rather than face the thought of primarying the bastid next year, but the whole thing is mildly amusing. Having him caucus with us and having to bite his lip when speaking of the returning
Speaker Pelosi is a bit precious.

(37,428 posts)You are very forgiving...and not entirely wrong.
But King is thinking not merely of joining the Democratic Party, but of occupying a seat that could go to a politician who hasn't made a career of demeaning, poisoning and paupering the electorate.
I wouldn't want a carpetbagger who just changed ties.

There are things that I dislike about pretty much every politician. But I am really focusing on the numbers here.

(55,981 posts)I guess those here that would accept a Republican into our party arent happy with that. It never fails to amaze me that some here will spew hatred toward a Republican one day and then welcome him into the Democratic Party the next. I guess the letter behind his name is the only important factor. His low-life, anti 99% ideology is acceptable if he has a D behind his name.

(2,345 posts)I think it is up to the individual. No one can tell anyone else which party they choose to register with. It is a selection one makes as they fill out their own individual voter registration form.
Are you advocating for a change in voter registration laws?

(26,355 posts)Granted, we're gonna have ideological difficulties, but on the bright side, if Peter King switches to being a Dem, he's gonna be beholden to our party, and will have to do a lot of things our way. He'll be on our side waving spears at them instead of the other way around.
Of course I've got mixed feelings about this, but having one of theirs switch to our side is always good news, especially when you're plotting strategy.
