This is all rumor mill, but someone I know that is connected to a DoD contractor said that they were told that civilian support of military operations is back to work on Tuesday.

Sec Def Chuck Hagel ordered that all civilian DOD personnel get to work. Must be planning something big.

for the Department of the Navy and she was ordered back to work today as an (I believe) exempt employee. Non-exempt employees aren't being called back yet from what I understand.

The local commissary (the largest in the US) gave away remaining perishables to a couple San Diego food banks last Wednesday as part of their "shutdown process". As uncertain as the recall is, I don't think they'll have any new stock coming in until there's clearer direction.

There was a run last Tuesday when word went out; they were marking down fruits and veggies by noon and they were out of meat by 3pm, and the line to checkout (with 12 registers and 8 self-serve checkouts open) was all the way around the inside of the building and heading outside by the time we were leaving at 1pm.
It took me twenty minutes to shop (stocking up on premium cat food, baby sundries, and diabetic friendly "easy lunches", snacks, and veggies for Laz to last through this week), but 45 minutes to get to a check-out register...

The commissary is a major "low price" food source for most retirees, disabled vets, and military families in the county, and takes a lot of stress off low-income households. There aren't a lot of reliable sources of a fairly wide range of safe and healthy low-cost groceries of good quality in the low-income areas (mainly convenience stores and an occasional Quik-e-mart or under-stocked IGA), so it's not just a "perk" for the military; there is a benefit in the community to having the commissary.
