Maybe it's just me, and this post is not even close to necessary but it seems the US is at risk of becoming precariously similar to the same destructive patterns we saw in Rome. A division of people brought on by cultural differences, in our case the two extremely different political views polarizing the country. Our military, much like Rome has been stretched across an ever increasing battlefield, leaving us in a weaker position that we would like to admit. Some might say the US is going through an identity crisis much like Rome in that we are not quite united on important issues such as war, and or social program support for those who need it.
Admittedly I am not a History major and these are just thoughts, but the point is a legitimate one. In spite of the division and hypocrisy displayed by some of our politicians Americans should consider ultimately we are all one. True we may continue to struggle with our direction but in the end the voters will have their way, and democracy will thrive.
Maybe this post is a waste of time, but please consider we can debate and argue all we care to, but ultimately we need to stay united at heart. The cream will always rise to the surface.

(11,804 posts)Almost all the nations who are strong enough to challenge us are tied to us through economic bonds; and conquering us and deposing our rulers would be difficult. On the other hand, we could see a retrenchment - a return to a more practical foreign policy. Abandoning our bases in many parts of the world.
I suspect our situation is more like Great Britain at the time when they were the premier superpower - we aren't necessarily going away, but we will increasingly have to share the stage with the Chinese.

I look at this more as 'The South Is Gonna do it Again' - than Rome repeating itself.
This is not a slam at Southern DUers - as obviously the Confederacy has pockets (at least 30 or 40) around the United States now. .. .
