Am I missing something? Isn't the legislation about requiring INSURANCE policies include birth control for women? How is that "tax payer funded"?

(18,775 posts)It's been repeated ad nauseum. "I'm not paying for..." yadda yadda. And the truth is they *aren't* paying for it.

None of it is true.

Edit to add: They don't realize that proliferate birth control actually lowers medical costs. Pregnancies and children are expensive for a tax payer, or insurance company, -- whatever! (No anti-pun intended with proliferate.)

(45,851 posts)The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ... "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that realityjudiciously, as you willwe'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.

Thanks for reminding me of that quote. I hate it. It makes my blood boil.

(37,364 posts)is that you shouldn't have to pay for something you don't agree with and now contraception is being considered abortion, then the argument for funding is the next logical application of the tactic.

(14,337 posts)Santorum said that himself. Griwwold was not about abortion, but whether MARRIED couples should have the right to BC which was then banned by the state of Ct. We told you this would happen with the right wing, religious. They not only want to ban abortion, but BC too. Contraception is IMMORAL. The PURPOSE of sex is procreation. That is their argument against gay marriage. Read between the lines. What separates gays from straight? PROCREATION. Once you take away the procreation from straight couples, the gay marriage argument goes down in flames.
Yes, Viriginia, it is not about MONEY for contraception. It is the USE of contraception which DEFEATS the purpose of sex. Women who procreate are SLUTS and sinning against god's purpose. They want a 13th Century theocracy where women are just baby making machines.

(18,775 posts)You only have to look at the same people's stances on the death penalty and war to prove it.
It is, and has always been, about controlling women.

(11,909 posts)I realize that's one of their arguments, but shouldn't they also be trying to forbid women who are post-menopausal from getting married, if the only reason for getting married is to procreate?
Yes, I know, expecting logic from idiot rightwingers....

(18,775 posts)That's actually quite alarming if the conclusion is correct. And baffling, I can't understand what possible benefit to anyone it is to have low income women unable to access birth control.

(115,706 posts)It's an insurance benefit. So doesn't the money for coverage for this benefit come from insurance premiums paid by all of the policy holders and their employers? It's private insurance, so there's no government money involved at all (there should be, but that's a whole 'nother discussion). The whole basis of the brouhaha was that Catholic employers didn't want to be paying insurance premiums to private insurers to cover contraception for their employees. THERE'S NO GOVERNMENT MONEY IN THIS. NO TAX DOLLARS ARE BEING USED TO BUY ANYBODY'S BIRTH CONTROL PILLS.
I wish some of these lame media flacks would point this out.

(51,666 posts)presumably makes enough money to be paying at least some income taxes. And if not, they still pay sales taxes. So the stuff covered by insurance is paid by taxpayers.

So the woman comes forth with this frankly hilarious claim that shes having so much sex and her buddies with her that she cant afford it and not one person says, did you ever think about maybe backing off the amount of sex that you have?

and of course, the fact that health insurance companies did cover Viagra but NOT BIRTH CONTROL led several states in the mid-90s to start mandating insurance co's to carry BC...
and as for the Catholics complaining about their tax dollars going to birth control, why don't I hear more Muslims complain about government subsidies to farms that produce pork? Or Buddhists complaining about the military budget? Or atheists opposing government faith-based initiatives?

(37,648 posts)which we will, through increased premiums. Ins. cos. base the cost of premiums on a number of things, incl. cost of claims. So when b.c. is covered, the cost of premiums will rise. It is true that those of us who have insurance will all collectively pay for that, just like we do for the other things that ins. cos. pay for. It'll be millions of women, taking b.c. every month, for years on end. Like millions of people with a chronic illness.
and I quote: "... So, Ms. Fluke and the rest of you feminazis, here's the deal: If we are going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. And I'll tell you what it is. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch...if we're gonna sit here, and if we're gonna have a part in this, then we want something in return, Ms. Fluke: And that would be the videos of all this sex posted online so we can see what we are getting for our money."

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone's bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.
