Elizrael Elizabeth Tsurkov A Russian reporter witnessed the massacre in Mezzeh, Damascus on February

(This was originally written in Russian in one long paragraph, too long to post - arbitrary four paras created)

6 days ago, I flew to Damascus, to understand what is really going on - a terrible conspiracy of foreign terrorists or terror of everyday crazy power. During those six days, I met and talked with dozens of people - from both the opposition and those who supported the Assad regime. Usually, I know that there are at least two truths, and each of them has a right to exist. Here in Syria, the first time I saw what could be wrong. It is possible an absolute evil - and it may even be a person. Individuals who work on the regime in Syria, are terrible: thick red neck, distorted facial expressions neurotic traits, small puffy eyes - it is a person of liars and murderers. military commander in the region Deraa. During the "interview" he shouted, so that I have laid ears. Deraa governor of the province - a track record in the Mukhabarat (political police). At first he held back, but under the pressure of questions (there were 10 journalists from different media) in the end, too, began to yell. The monitor - surveillance cameras hanging around his office. When you talk to these people, I want one - as soon as possible to leave. I guess everyone knows this type, it is in Russia: a corrupt bureaucrat, cop-hell-raisers, just gopota intoxicated on the street. In Syria, all of these people were fighting for their existence. They talked about foreign terrorists and protect the homeland with the same words that Russian governors say about increase of salaries and jobs. These were people from another planet.

The opposition is also a person - they are beautiful, individual and human. In fact, not much need to feel the intimacy with strangers, just a common universal values: the death and violence - it is bad, justice and forgiveness - well. Time uttered a joke, the relevant words drown the ice - I would be happy to call a friend of any of those with whom we met with the "other" side.

Perhaps it is this contrast was what knocked me over all of the tracks in Syria: Day demonstrations under fire, arrests, beatings, faceless cabinets investigators Mukhabarat, an escape from the crowds poluzverey with knives and sticks, and in the evening - a stylish coffee shop and hookah, a pleasant chat in a friendly circle, FEYSBUK and backgammon. It turned out that the generation of the Internet hamsters can not only put "like" in the comments, but to overthrow a regime. Every day, these people left the cozy coffee shops, going unarmed to the machines and quite literally risking going to jail under torture or in the morgue. Pacifist belief in the right was stronger than bullets and knives - this is probably the main conclusion of the Syrian revolution.

In high-rise in the Al-Mazza I got to take some pictures a great demonstration, which was planned in connection with the funeral of the three protesters killed by police the day before. question whether the shot is actually the police in Syria at unarmed demonstrators, is key in terms of the reaction of the international community and UN. Foreign journalists are sitting in Damascus, as a rule, a 5-tizvezdochnyh hotels and drink whiskey, so they are carefully written editorial with the words of opposition, "according to unconfirmed reports." Nonconfirmation is the main argument of the Assad regime. On Saturday, I saw that the Syrian government has denied a year - the police actually shoot at people, a no foreign terrorists there. Police and "shabiha" groups are waiting for a suitable demonstration minute before the shooting - the flag of the Syrian Revolution, the first bursts of automatic fire were heard as soon as the body have taken to the cemetery. We were on the 6th or 7th floor high-rise just above the demonstration and tried to remove something through a closed window. It was impossible to open windows - the police and their assistants "shabiha" constantly looking at the window looking for cameras. Without any warning or shooting into the air several military with machine guns suddenly began firing into the thick of the crowd. ten thousand people on a narrow avenue escape nowhere. Several people have fallen - it was clear both of them gushing blood, just like in the movies. Demonstrators began to scatter, trying to drag the wounded - in the public hospitals they would have finished. The street was filled with smoke from the powder gases. One of the military fired a machine gun, which he managed with difficulty - from the muzzle of the impact there were a wide fan, covering the entire street and the houses around it. In Damascus, the snow actually quite difficult to make a stand at the window, when the next shoot and kill people.
