It's because he promised them what they really wanted but then he couldn't deliver.

Right Wing Authoritarians reflexively defer to demagogues. Cruz had no exit plan for getting out of this mess other than the certainty that Obama would cave (ain't gonna happen).

Thus the Republicans have no plan and are stuck.
