Rest in Peace Miriam Carey

I don't know this woman, i don't know why she did this. but I fear she is another casualty in the War on the Mentally Ill.

TO long this country has gone and not properly taken care of those that suffer from Mental Illness and in most cases when they enter an altercation with the Police they end up dead

I know this woman ran down an officer, but this shoot first ask questions later should not be the one and only way they deal with mentally ill people

ETA:
I am not faulting the police I am simple sadden that her life ended this way. because I suspect in the coming days it will come out that this woman had a history of mental illness. but this is how her chapter ends.

I commend the Police for being on the front lines even in a time when they are not even getting paid.

I don't think you can reasonably fault the police for "how they deal with the mentally ill" in this case. How would they have even known she had a history of mental illness, to begin with?

If she was actively mentally ill during this entire incident, it's no wonder she fled from LEOs. Fleeing from LEO's is a very bad idea under any circumstances, especially next to the White House and Congress. I'm guessing she was ordered to surrender several times and did not do so. Very sad, especially now for her daughter who is without a mother.

These stories quickly go the other way but there is usually human tragedy at the core.

The officer that is injured and in the hospital is the one that crashed his car into the barrier that automatically came up out of the ground, right?

So, who got run over?

Apparently she ran into him and he flipped onto the hood of her car, and maybe over the roof. Unclear on all the details.

She could have been trying to drive a car bomb into the white house for all they knew.

We need to find a way to help people before they do these horrible acts.

Especially when you know a family member or friend needs help and you can't do anything about it.

I'm glad the child was not killed.

Mentally ill people have civil rights too. It's possible *someone* knew she was on some psychotic mission to crash into the White House, evade LEO's and drive to Congress, but somehow I doubt it. It's more likely she was in DC on a trip, had a psychotic break, and freaked out completely, thus ending her life by accident.

Especially since we really have no idea what happened. "Someone knew something" isn't saying much, since we don't know what the something is or if anyone "knew" it.

Should we start locking people up because someone claims that they appear to be in emotional turmoil?

the same goes for all the other cases.

glad her daughter is ok and she seems young enough that hopefully she will not remember this .

i don't think the police had a choice in this. it wasn't a case where they could have easily asked a question instead of shooting.

Someone who needs help doesn't always know that they need it, and with mental health issues, there are a lot of things that cannot be helped
