My disabled son turned 18 so now we are attempting to get him SSDI and SSI and if you don't know what those acronyms mean, please count yourself blessed. DDA and DSHS are two others you are lucky if you don't know. So in the last 3 days, we've gotten a denial letter for SSI, an approval letter for SSI, but not the full amount he is entitled to and a letter saying they sent too much in the back pay but we can appeal.
I was annoyed when he was turned down but that's what they do the first time, hoping you'll go away. We aren't going away. But these last two letters have me wondering if bureaucracy equals stupid or plain evil. I know there are people behind these dumb ass letters so it's probably just the former.
And I'm sick right now, so the thought of slogging up the hill of more paperwork is just fucking magnificent.
I remember first term, Obama said he wanted to tighten up the government by looking at costs line by line. I think reality sunk in soon after but I also think he was on to something there. Social Security is an important program as is SSI but the amount of paperwork sitting on the desk right now says to me that neither system is run well and poorly run institutions bleed money.

I wonder if it has to do with certain gate keepers turning down a lot of claims...

(21,155 posts)I applied for it because I could not afford to pay for his group home. They first gave me $600 the home costs $1100 monthly I went back to them and they raised it to $885 I still have to pay the difference which now is becoming a strain because I lost one of my 2 jobs so I make half now. I am on a wait list now to get a hearing with an administrative law judge. I have talked to other parents in my situation who receive SSI for their young adults who live in a group home and they get more than my son does and it is enough to pay for the group homes. I still pay out of my pocket for one of his therapists. I've heard it can take up to a year to get a hearing because of the backlog.
So keep trying and be prepared to jump though many hoops.
