Taking a bullet to protect Congress, while not being paid

If it turns out that way, it would be quite an emblem for the shutdown.

(This post is regarding early reports—prone to inexactitude, of course—of potential injury to capitol police officer(s) in Hill shooting incident. Capitol police are on duty, but will not be paid until shutdown ends and Congress authorizes retroactive pay.)

Adding this photo only because it is such a striking picture.
(The pictured officer is a sniper and is alive and well.)

Are they really working without pay?

What am I saying? Of course they are.

It is probably a sense of duty and loyalty to our country that drives these people to protect OUR country's capital.

Cthulu, I clicked on this link worried that the event you postulate had already happened. You might want to add a 'what-if' to your OP subject line. Let's hope the officers (& other innocent people) stay safe.

The irony of the police (and all federal workers) being cut-off from funding at this juncture in time is powerful enough without postulating a tragedy before it happens.

On-edit - Other links are now saying at least one officer has been injured. I hope the shooter is rapidly apprehended, and no more injuries or deaths occur. The postulated irony has become all too real.

They may turn out to be incorrect, as ALL such early reports are, but it is confirmed that there were shots fired and the TV news has continued the injured-police reporting, rather than retracting it.

So though it may well turn out to be otherwise, I don't think the post is any more or less responsible than the current news reporting.

And since shots were fired and we know pretty well that capitol police apprehended someone, the Capitol police are, at very least, risking being shot to protect Congress while not being paid by that same Congress.

(The incident started at the White House and proceeded to in front of the capitol where it ended, so yea Capitol Police.)
