Boehner's a drunk.

I'm not trying to bash drunks but, when the fate of this country rests in the tremulous hands of an obvious drunk, there's a problem. He was so shit-faced the other night at that late-night press conference I thought for sure someone in the media would pick up on it. Sometimes I think alcoholism is the last protected vice in American politics. If he was a cokehead or a womanizer the media would be all over it.

I ask myself again and again why Boehner would make such a poor decision as to bow to the tea party pressure and shut down the government. I suspect his drunkenness has played a role in that. Maybe it's time for an intervention. It's definitely time to call him on it. At the very least, we should attach that label to him whenever we speak of him, as in, "That drunk Boehner won't even call a vote." Nothing scares a drunk like Boehner more than exposure.

As a recovering alcoholic, I see my own pattern of avoiding conflict, postponing conflict and tough decisions until they're either made for me or blow over, which they never really do, and of trying to get the work out of the way in order to go back to drinking as soon as possible. What alcoholics hate more than anything is consequences, and Boner is queued up for a few. So I would imagine his drinking has ratcheted up a bit recently. I don't know about the exposure doing any good--he'll just deny it, or rationalize it by making a joke like "if you had my job", "if you had to deal with Harry Reid", etc. The things that really stung when I was drinking were situations where I was held responsible for my actions, because that's impossible when you're shitfaced. I knew I couldn't be responsible, because all I was going to do was drink.

I was hesitant to post this because I didn't want offend anyone. I was a counselor at a treatment facility for many years so I usually speak of these things with more empathy and compassion and I don't generally like to diagnose people over the Internet. I think this situation calls for bluntness though.

I hear you about the exposure and consequences but I honestly think if that aspect of his life started getting attention, he would do anything to avoid it. In this case, "anything" would be calling for a vote and ending this farce.
