Does the Republican party exist at this point?

No, seriously.

I'm kind of a history nerd. Is there still a Republican party in any real, historical, poli sci sense as an ideological pole? Party mechanisms have lived on past their actual political usefulness before.

From the Tea Baggers in their midst. From the enormously self-destructive plays for power. From falling so far from their Reagan/Bush heyday.

Of course they will be the pebble in everyone's shoe for quite a while but historically I think they're done.

not a conservative party ala William F. Buckley Jr. or even Ronald Reagan.

Parties change over time. The Democrats used to be a Southern Party often associated with racist attitudes. That is now the Republican party.
