President Barack Obama took on House Republicans over the government shutdown again Thursday in a speech to a small Maryland construction company, saying House Speaker John Boehner should call for a vote on a spending bill that would allow Congress members to vote their concience.
"My simple message today is, call a vote...let every individual member of Congress make up their own minds," the President said in a speech at M. Luis Construction in Rockville, Md.
"Take a vote," he said, "and end this shutdown right now."
"There will be no negotiation over this," Obama said later in the speech. "The American People are not pawns in some political game."

(15,438 posts)President Obama knows that to give the Republicans what they want (which is to undo the last elections) is a fool's errand.
Republicans want huge, long-term concessions for a six week extension of the budget. Then, in two weeks and emboldened, they can come back to start all over again for the debt ceiling debates with even more egregious concessions.
President Obama and the Democrats are standing firm because they know that to give in now is to embolden the already deluded but bold Republicans in the House to demand even more concessions.
I doubt they'll stop until President Obama agrees to relinquish the WH to Mitt Romney for the remainder of his second term, and the Senate Democrats agree to hand over power to the GOP minority so that they can finish off this country for good. They don't want anything less.

(72,790 posts)Take a vote. Yay or Nay on a clean bill. Pretty simple. The select few are making this a more difficult process than it needs to be.

This has got to stop now.

(34 posts)gets the grease- Why has the unrealistic/illegal demands of 10-20% of the population been able to derail our nation? They yell the loudest and most often, drowning out the more 'rational voices' . Contact ALL your reps, email, fax, call, tweet- #CallAVote -make your voice heard. Good website for info on how to contact your reps including in some cases links to their social media accounts

(81,298 posts)Granted, with the government shutdown, you might get a recording, but you also might get transferred from the main switchboard to the office of the Senator or Congresscritter of your choice and THEY have a recording, and you may be able to leave a message. If you can leave a message, DO IT. Somebody's eventually gonna pick up those messages and they need to hear YOUR voice as well!!! They need to hear from our side as though it were a tsunami! A TIDAL WAVE of OUR SIDE'S VIEW!!!
They need to be drowning in it and suffocating in it by the time this is over.

(13,685 posts)Really, it is just that simple. Allow our elected congress critters to do what we sent them there to do: Vote.
Up or down, let them vote. Up, is a vote to pay the bills, down is to hide from the responsibility.

(12,389 posts)Everyone knows that he has to meet a quota before he caves, in order to convince his masters that he really, REALLY is trying. I think he still has to bankrupt 6 thousand families and kick an additional three hundred sick people out of health programs. But give him a break; he's working on it!
