Spain's Metropol Parasol (2011) claims to be the largest wooden structure in the world. The building was designed to look like a giant mushroom, and visitors can walk on top to see gorgeous views of Seville.
Kunsthaus Graz (2003) or the Graz Art Museum in Austria looks like an alien spaceship compared to the red tile roofs of Graz's old town. It houses contemporary art and lights up at night.
Experience Music Project (2000) is an undulating museum in Seattle founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The Seattle Center Monorail even runs directly into the gold, silver, and violet building.

(64,933 posts)That is hideous. Made even more ugly by all those cool old buildings around it.
The others are pretty cool.

(27,630 posts)be bored by all the cool old buildings. Especially if they have classic old apartment buildings like those everywhere.

(235 posts)It is hideous. Nothing about the building is remotely appealing. Inside is a different story, but the outside is vomit inducing.

(4,138 posts)All the weird bends and curlicues make for a lot of wasted space on the inside. Some of it looks neat, especially since, unlike the outside, it's not trying to coexist with the cool 1960s Zeerust of the Seattle Center, but there's surprisingly little square footage devoted to the exhibits for such a big building. Which is a problem, what with it being a museum and all.
Compare it to the downtown library:
It's architecture-as-ornament, too, but it doesn't look like a melted pile of crap, and they remembered to lay out the inside so that they could put a bunch of books in it. Although it too has a fair amount of underutilized space, such as this frankly unnerving 1970s dystopian sci-fi hallway:

(7,051 posts)This growing movement is actually pretty exciting and driven by a more organic conceptual perspective. There are few perfectly straight lines and ninety degree angles in nature. Technology and cutting edge building materials are making it possible to break the linear mindset that has dominated traditional architecture.
Thanks for posting, xchrom.
