Sadly I Have A Feeling The GOP Really Does Plan To Default. Anyone Feel The Same?

The reason I feel that way is that it will create so much chaos government will be reduced in the end and that is what they want. The leadership just seems determined to stay on the course they have chosen.

"Boner" is a coward and a drunk at a crucial time in US history. He may be the only one who can either save or trash this country. At this point I see no way out of this mess and no change in disposition.

And I do not know what citizens can do.

Love this flick. It's kind of an upside-down version of what's happening in Congress. However, in that case, you don't cheer those who drive off the cliff.

Keep buggering on, DUers!

And enjoy.

their list is not delivered, they will accuse the President and Democrats of refusing to negotiate and default on everything. (Apparently, negotiate in the Republican Lexicon means surrender.)

In one of my own OP's I asked "[link:http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023760293#post25|
What is their incentive to turning the government back on?]

Some seem to think I was raining on everybody's joy that the ACA started and Republicans were committing suicide.

As I see it, they have drastically cut the size of government (a major campaign promise) and stopped government spending (another promise), stopped government oversight of wall street (those jobs are unnecessary). There is a loyal base of about 20% that would believe them if they said the sky was really the inside of an eggshell on God's breakfast plate. A solid 70% of Americans are opposed to the shut down and Republicans don't give a shit.

What I think we are seeing is a coup d'état where all other government bodies are forced to capitulate to their demands, tyranny by the minority, or they will bring the government down. How long, after all, can the government function with no budget.

There is nothing in our constitution or our laws that allows us a legal means of dealing with this. The power of the purse is an enumerated power of the Congress, and the power to not fund something is an implied power. Republicans are using this flaw and they don't care what will happen. They can continue this right up to when the new Congress is sworn in in 2015 if they want, not that there will be anything left of our economy by that time.

I am hoping someone will come in and show me why it is utterly implausible that Republicans will do this.

isn't the POTUS *supposed* to *protect* the American people?

And not just from *Pearl Harbor* or 911 "events" since that one would be a lot WORSE in the end...

People laugh about the rice and beans part.

The country could go down pretty bad, and the fools don't care.

I hope something happens to stop this.

...and that he'll ultimately do whatever it takes to stop a default, even a silly trick like minting a trillion dollar platinum coin, if that's what it takes. Or simply appealling to the 14th Amendment.

I know he's said he wouldn't do any of these things, but faced with the actual prospect of a true default, I'm hoping he'd do what was necessary anyway. The default would be worse than any wrangling over a makeshift solution for it.
