Edwin Jay Mieses, 33, is in critical condition with a crushed spine, two broken legs and other injuries from Sundays confrontation, captured on a viral video that has drawn more than 4 million hits on YouTube.
"There's no hope for his back," his wife, Dayana Meises, told reporters on Tuesday. "They broke it in two different places, so he will be forever, forever paralyzed."
The family issued a statement on Wednesday night asking for privacy and announcing it had hired Allred, a media-savvy Los Angeles lawyer who usually specializes in women rights and sexual harassment cases.

(89,250 posts)another poster said she was just admitted to the NY bar so i can see her wanting to take on something big which she usually does to help her with future cases.
but this isn't the type of case she usually takes.

(25,704 posts)(NY may be different). In IL an insurance company has two obligations: the duty to defend and the duty to indemnify. Even if the policy is tendered and they are going after a person's personal assets they still have to provide a defense. Practically, going after personal assets is a mugs game so in exchange for the insurance policy limits a full release is necessary. Plus if the initial policy is tendered the excess carrier will step in to defend.
Insurance coverage law make my head sore.

(1 post)I ask the editor of this article to confirm with Gloria Allred that she is in fact representing Jay Meezee. While it may be true, I havent found any confirming statements from either Gloria Allred or her firm, which seems a bit odd to me, given the high visibility of this incident. I did see a few similar statements online, but they were made by Mr. Meezees supporters. Also, it's interesting that the same claim was made on the Justice for Jay Meezee Facebook page earlier today, but the post was quickly changed to remove that claim.

(68,644 posts)I can think of no good that can come from this except that other bikers learn to give up the practice of rude reckless riding (though I doubt it).
Maybe their family members will badger them into quitting (I kind of doubt that too).
And maybe the city and state police will but a stop to these ridiculous and dangerous Hollywood Stuntz type events.

It shows one angry person yanking the door open. All other bikers are either sitting beside their bikes or, like the paralyzed man, on the ground in front of the SUV helping the original accident victim.
Only one person approaches the SUV. The "surrounded by 20 to 30 people" happens long after the SUV paralyzes the victim.
Nobody is denting the SUV. That happens long after the SUV paralyzes the victim.
Nobody is threatening the SUV driver. That happens long after the SUV paralyzes the victim.
Why the SUV driver is not already in jail, I do not know. Unless the police have simply not seen this video of what happened BEFORE the riders chased down the driver.
Had I been driving that SUV, I would have been the first person out the door checking on the downed rider.

(17,600 posts)From the very beginning of the FULL video, the bikers have the SUV surrounded as they travel down the road, then one of the bikers (Cruz, who has been charged) clearly instigates the altercation.
What happened before, who knows. Did the SUV driver cut one of them off or something? If so, was it intentional? But in any case, to that point no one was physically injured, and the bikers had no justification for instigating a confrontation.

Funny thing happens when people see a lot of video, they get context and will see these guys were terrorizing the populace

(19,373 posts)First, what the were engaged in was an illegal activity. Not only were they purposefully impeding traffic in setting up a "sideshow", but they were doing it using non-street legal vehicles. Second, they had the SUV surround when the sportbike rider did a "brake check" inches from the SUV causing his own accident. It was at this point that the other riders initially attacked the SUV, including slashing it's tires. Only an idiot would have exited that vehicle under those conditions, and his next move to remove himself and family from danger was 100% justified.
I don't know what your agenda is in this case, but as a 40+ year motorcycle rider, I condemn the actions of the riders involved in this, not the victim in the SUV.

(89,250 posts)The family of the SUV driver involved in the bizarre motorcycle incident Sunday in New York that left a Lawrence man hospitalized with serious injuries today released a statement, saying they feared for their lives and were forced to take the actions they did.
Our sympathies go out to the injured motorcyclist and his family, the statement said, which was released by Alexian Liens lawyers, Nicholas J. Massimo and Frank C. Panetta. We were faced with a life-threatening situation, and my husband was forced under the circumstances to take the actions that he did in order to protect the lives of our entire family.
Lawrence resident Edwin Jay Mieses Jr., 32, who was riding one of dozens of motorcycles on the Henry Hudson Parkway Sunday afternoon, sustained two broken legs and other injuries after being run over by the SUV, police and his family have said.
Lien, his wife, and their 2-year-old daughter were planning a day out to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Instead, they were surrounded by a mob of reckless and violent motorcyclists, the statement said.
The family explains that they felt they were in grave danger, and said they believe anyone in their situation would have taken the same actions.
We would like to thank the brave citizens who risked their own safety to intervene on our behalf, the statement said. They truly helped save our lives and prevented my husband from suffering further injury. We also appreciate and are moved by the outpouring of love and support so many have expressed here in New York and around the country.
