Satellite Images From Syria - Amnesty International
Sometimes pictures are worth much, much more than a thousand words.
The following satellite imagery of the cities of Homs and Hama in Syria were provided by Amnesty International.
While some photographs reveal craters from President Bashar al-Assad’s bombing campaign throughout residential neighborhoods of Homs, others show that the military is also focusing on Hama, a city that was assaulted by Assad’s father 30 years ago (The Washington Post reported that as many as 10,000 people were killed during the three-week siege).
“With reports of a surge in ground assaults on the people of Homs today, the growing threat to the people of Hama, and a clear and demonstrated defiance by the Syrian leadership to adhere to the demands on the U.N. General Assembly to cease its attack on the people of Syria, there must be action,” said Scott Edwards, director of Amnesty International USA’s Tactical Response Unit, in a statement sent to us earlier this week.
Images of artillery impact craters within the neighborhood of Bab ‘Amr in Homs, Syria, were taken on February 20, 2012.
Nine of these 12 field guns deployed about eight miles outside of Homs are oriented toward Homs.
