Question from an European for understanding the Shutdown

Last edited Wed Oct 2, 2013, 08:57 AM - Edit history (1)

I am German (living in Germany) but am very interested in what is going on in your country.

My question is: How will the government solve the Shutdown problem? What are the next steps?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it hard to grasp, isn't it. Andrew Sullivan's piece put it in perspective for me... Liberal_Stalwart71 Oct 2013 #10

I haven't seen things this crazy since the 60s. Our politics has always been crazy, but usually you could see how it would benefit someone, this is just nostalgia for the past, delusional.

that is, the pressure will keep going up on both sides to do something.
So it can end:
a) if the repubs cave, and let's say allow a clean (withour ACA defunding) spending bill to the floor, which could pass with 17 repub house votes + all the dems.
b) if the democrats cave, and go to some reconciliation meeting, where they allow for the ACA to be delayed
c) if the shutdown keeps going until the debt ceiling debate starts, at which point I could see the democrats coming up with concessions about other things than ACA to resolve the debt ceiling, and the repubs cave on ACA to resolve the shutdown.

I think c is most likely, but a is possible. B I don't see happen - and reconciliation is a process designed to work out differences between the House and Senate for laws that are in progress. ACA is a done deal, and there should be no reconciliation.

As far as I can tell, the Obama admin doesn't have any "workarounds" for the shutdown. The House controls the purse, period. For the debt ceiling, there ARE workarounds, but they are very contentious and could result in impeachment procedures.

Do you think they would push Obama that far to do those debt ceiling workarounds to finally have a "reason" to impeach him? O aren't they thinking that far and complex?

I doubt the Dems will cave on ACA, especially now that it started.

especially if they can win back the Senate next year. Absolutely no question about it! And our corporate owned and operated media would be complicit because it has refused to hold Republicans accountable just as they did in the run up to the Iraq invasion!!

since it isn't a coherent party anymore but rather it's been highjacked. That being said, there's still something like party leadership, and players like Karl Rove. It would be pretty weird if that kind of people weren't thinking ahead.

I do think they will push Obama that far, yes. And I think Obama will then do what is needed to avoid economic catastrophy. And yes, there will be calls for impeachment. Thay these would be succesful, that I doubt given the democratic-controlled senate, but I don't know that process well enough. Another foreigner responding here

but not the ACA. I truly believe that the GOP will be forced to blink first. Or, the president will be used to use constitutional means for getting the bills paid. Debt ceiling is not in the Constitution. I think it's going to get worse because the Republicans want a crisis. More important, Europeans and everyone around the world must understand how much they hate this black man and want to destroy him. It's much worse than what they did to Bill Clinton. They simply want to destroy Barack Obama. Period. It is absolutely critical that our friends around the world understand this.

even though I don't understand it. I just can't grab the idea of feeling superior because of the color of your skin.

I am really glad that President Obama didn't cave on the ACA this time.

Until the drunk fuck that is the Speaker sends a bill to the Senate that doesn't hurt the ACA, nothing will happen.

Once that happens, the Senate can pass the bill. it can be either a temporary measure or the annual budget bill.

Alternately, Captain Fuckwad can send a bad bill to the Senate, the Senate can remove the part about the ACA being destroyed, and send it back to the House. if the House then passes it, we're all set .

Obama signs it, government opens up again.
