Hubby was just out walking the dog after dinner and encountered a copperhead. We don't think
Snowy was bit.
Dusk. Well camouflaged in the grass/weeds at the side of the road.
Why do I think this is a metaphor for what is going on right now?

(15,805 posts)Had to deal with those when I lived in Williamsburg VA back in the '70s. Almost landed on one as it stuck its head out from under the stairs outside my front door. As a precaution they vacated the apartment complex; found a nest of the things living inside the walls. Still gives me the squicks!

Guy cleaning it out walked over to Mr. Dixie with one speared on his pitchfork, letting us know to be aware of them around.
With all the magnolia trees around, and tons of their leaves on the ground, the rattlers and copperheads are impossible to see, they blend in so well.
One of the downsides of living in the midst of a few acres of trees.
And the main reason we keep the dog on a leash, he does not get to run around the property.

neighborhood where we live now.
I see them--run over in the road--all the time. I've seen them alive
slithering across the road.
Our last dog was bit by one about 2006. She survived. I thought she'd had
a stroke because she was old and wouldn't get up. Had to take her to emergency vet (on a Saturday, of course).
But she recovered.

(332 posts)of them. Some years worse than others. One of my dogs who hated snakes and killed them every time he saw them was bite 2 different times. Poor guy really suffered with the pain but it would be very rare that it would kill a dog. Around here they don't even bother taking them to a vet as all they do is give them benedryl and predisone. I HATE the damn things!!!
Now when I lived out west the rattlesnakes were just as bad and those WILL kill a dog, thank goodness we didn't have this little guy when we lived there.
