Don't Expect the Government Shutdown to End Soon
Wall Street Journal: "That was the message Tuesday from Senate Republican leaders and Democratic aides who said there is a growing likelihood that non-essential parts of the federal government remain shuttered for more than two weeks until lawmakers agree on how to increase the debt ceiling."
"Two top Senate Democratic aides also said they thought the two issues would end up dovetailing together, saying that from their perspective the next move was up to House Republicans. Democrats are unlikely to negotiate with Republicans over a short-term government funding bill, so the delay will continue until House Republicans agree to take up a Senate-passed six-week funding bill."
GOP pollster David Winston to Greg Sargent: "A long term shutdown is not a tenable solution in the eyes of Americans... All the parties involved had better realize there are repercussions here. The biggest concern people should have is the level of uncertainty this injects as voters think about who they are going to choose in 2014. People should be concerned about what that will look like."

(32,324 posts)The Oval Office wanted to, he could simply underline the section of the Constitution that stipulates how the legal debts of the USA are guaranteed to be paid, and he can sign an executive order and get the country up and running.
Our Presidents are all happy to sign executive orders that allow FEMA to take over in situations like New Orleans, and other executive orders that stipulate even far worse abuses of our civil rights, but this time, when we need this done, we have as President a "Constitutional Scholar" who apparently never took the time to read the Constitution!
Mr President, see that the pin goes back into the grenade!

(32,324 posts)I get so very tired of the sad fact that some people on DU had more savvy and more awareness of what is going on in this nation than our elected officials.
I am sad that it was two gentlemen overseeing the House Committee on Financial Oversight (one of these two being Kucinich) who taught me the scam that was being perpetuated upon the citizens of this nation, by the Bush/Obama/Paulson/Geithner/Bernanke rendering of our way of life into a slavery that now benefits only the One Percent.
If DU'er autorank could figure out what needs to be done, then why the hell can't our elected officials, starting with Obama, and ending with my local Supervisors?
Why do we have Michelle Obama traipsing out to her organic garden during May 2009, during the same exact time period that her husband is appointing the spawn of Satan Monsanto people to positions inside the FDA that guarantee the GM poisons will be in our food supply forever!?!? What does that tell you about this couple?
Granted her arms are gorgeous, but his financial policies have insured that we are now a nation controlled by the One Percenters, of for and by the One Percenters. Sometimes when I am very tired and very hurt inside (my financial bankruptcy suffered during 2005 & 2006 means I can't dip into the $$ 70K worth of retirement funds i once had as a reserve so right now, I cannot figure out how I will pay the measly $ 241 a month the new insurance mandates require.) I think it is great that some people can anesthetize themselves to what is happening by being blind to what is happening, but i don't have that ability!
However, here is some cheery advice on how to support Obama for those who don't mind that his policies are of the One percent. After all, because Obama!

(26,366 posts)don't believe he has the authority to ignore the debt limit. Here is an article from today that addresses the matter:

(32,324 posts)While the cynic in me wonders exactly which stocks the President's advisers have advised their financial advisers to go ahead and "short."
The advisers' arguments seem rather tepid to me.

(32,324 posts)Usually wise in order to avoid catastrophe.
What is the basic situation? In a nutshell, the USA has essential expenses all of which have been entered into the Federal government's budget by some type of Congressional approval. These expenses are covered by the Fourteenth Amendment paragraph and the fine explanation offered up by DU'er markpkessinger over this past weekend, unless and until someone here can explain how normal expenses are not part of the public debt. All these "budgetary ceilings" happen to be are kabuki theater, which is brought about by the fact that the Republicans nutjobs are indeed nutjobs, and that the Democratic party needs the kabuki theater that is offered as a cover story for their failings by the five year long approach to governing "We Democrats have to negotiate and have to give up much of what actually needs to be done to appease these fine people on the other side of the aisle as we Dems want to be liked!"
However I do find it gratifying that both Pelosi and Baucus are of the opinion that these expenses, and the notion of "budget ceilings" are not the important thing, and what is the important thing is the Fourteenth Amendment. Pelosi has been insisting that the Fourteenth Amendment be followed, since at least Jan 2013:

She re-iterated that stance last week.
DU'er Markpkessinger's fine explanation, worthy of being repeated:
"What the Constitution is clear about, however, as per the 14th Amendment, that "the validity of the public debt of the United States , , , shall not be questioned.
"Therefore, the President, pursuant to his oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States" and as a matter of national security, should instruct the Dept. of the Treasury to simply ignore the debt ceiling and continue to fund the operation and debt obligations of the government. Protecting the country from the willful infliction of harm by a minority faction would be a perfectly valid and legitimate legal defense for the President in the impeachment effort that would surely follow (and would just as surely fail)."

(30,439 posts)Ryan made his pitch as he sat next to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), suggesting House Republican leaders may be considering lumping the two fights together in the days ahead. That would mean the the government shutdown would last for another two weeks or so.
A Republican leadership aide told The Huffington Post that Ryan's call for tying the issues together is "a possibility thats far from certain, but it is certainly possible."
A White House official flatly dismissed the idea.
"We are not negotiating over the debt limit," said the official.

Let's hope they stick to their guns and flip the bird to the GOP

(297,275 posts)what they say. I just hope there is a miracle to resolve this sooner than later without the repub/teaorrists getting anything but the door in 2014.

(32,324 posts)To anticipate and to figure out which stocks to short should a shut down occur. If you don't think that Congressional members, or at least their extended family members, aren't making a bundle, even as Wall Street shows losses, then I have this bridge for you in Brooklyn.

(145,291 posts)This shutdown will last at least a week and maybe up to the debt ceiling deadline. I am not expecting the GOP to back down for a while.
President Obama and the Democrats now need to make sure that they do not back down unless there is also a fix for the debt ceiling

(5,105 posts)The fact that he's finally decided to draw a line in the sand and hold it is heartening.
Fuck the GOPigs. They always bet against the People, at least in the last 30 years. "Let's Roll!" and cheers in KKKongress, repigs eager to shut the Gov down, Fox Noise talk of "slimming down," etc.
FUCK THEM. It's time they lost what little tiny balls they have.
