Government shutdowns under Democrats.

The Republicans keep on harping on this. So I did a brief google search.

Here's a link to a NYTimes article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/09/25/here-is-every-previous-government-shutdown-why-they-happened-and-how-they-ended/

I have to say, that while I lived in the DC area in the 70's until the end of 1981, and while I recall the political events surrounding these things, I do not recall actual government shutdown, employees being furloughed, the Smithsonian and National Monuments being shuttered, none of that. The article seems to indicate that the shutdowns before the 1995 one were all more or less symbolic and things went on as usual.

Does anybody else recall more specifics?
