By Tara Culp-Ressler
On Tuesday, Obamacares state-level insurance marketplaces opened to the public, marking the start of a six-month enrollment period that will stretch into March. Although theres been some confusion around the health laws new marketplaces also known as exchanges initial reports suggest that a significant number of people are seeking out information about reform. States across the country are overwhelmed with huge amounts of traffic to their new exchange websites.
Here are some of the early details about Obama enrollment emerging on a state and national level (this post will be updated as the day continues):
National website: A senior Obama administration official reported that just three hours after Obamacares open enrollment period launched, the national Healthcare.gov site had one million visitors. Thats five times more users on the site than the number of users who have ever visited Medicare.gov at the same time. At about 3:45 pm, the White Houses deputy press secretary reported that up to 2.8 million people had visited the site since its launch, and 81,000 people had called the federal hotline to get information about Obamacare.

Colorado: In Colorado, the exchange site opened for business at 8:00 am Mountain Standard Time. Three hours later, state officials had completed the first enrollments and the site had logged over 34,500 unique visitors. During the first half of the day, 1,300 Colorado residents created accounts on the site. Creating an account is the first step for people who want to shop for coverage and eventually buy a new plan under Obamacare.

Florida: MSNBC reports that community health care clinics in Orlando are experiencing long lines as low-income people are visiting to learn more about their options under Obamacare. The CEO of a community clinic in Miami that primarily services uninsured Floridians told MSNBC that Tuesday represents a new day for low-income patients who can now gain affordable coverage.

(593 posts)because it is so busy. I'll wait until late tonight or next week I guess. It doesn't take effect until next year so there isn't a huge rush although I am curious what the plans are going to be.

(23,156 posts)three months before it goes into effect, should really make it possible to iron out most of the kinks.
And yeah, who'da thunk it that people would want affordable health care? What's wrong with them?

(49,002 posts)This is to attempt to block other people from signing up.
It is doomed, but might bump statistics on the first day.

(2,204 posts)Normally you'd expect massive server and session outages on the first day, even for a web-based service. I'd be interested to see what sort of testing and verification processes they ran leading up to this.

(12,165 posts)This law means a lot to me and gives me a sense of relief. If I lose my job for whatever reason, I'll be able to get health insurance. If I decide to start my own business, I'll be able to get health insurance.
I grew up without insurance and my father could have avoided emergency surgery by having his condition caught early through preventative care. His emergency surgery put our family home, which he built with his own hands, on the line.
I keep saying this, but I'll say it again: The ACA is nothing short of a miracle for so many people.

(199 posts)After 5 years without insurance because of pre-existing conditions and the cost of health insurance, I went online and was approved for Medicaid tonight. Zero cost!
Thankfully, I live in Kentucky and have a democratic governor that expanded Medicaid.
I'm thinking about a bumper sticker proclaiming my happiness about Obamacare! Hey smart people out there.....give me a few zingers.
