Resolved - Any Republican who whines about Compromise needs to be punched in the face!

What Republicans want isn't compromise - what they want is capitulation! I understand that there are differences between how Democrats and Republicans view Obamacare. And we should have debates on how to implement it.

If Republicans want to see Obamacare go away there are a number of methods within the system they might have used. I would be upset if they succeeded, even angry. But i wouldn't be outraged.

They could have voted it out through the legislative process. They tried, both with the initial bill and some 40 times since then. They failed.

They could have won sufficient House or Senate seats that they could overrule it; they could have gotten Romney elected. They failed - and given that Obamacare was a central tenet of their campaign, doesn't that imply that Americans don't hate it as much as they believe they do?

They could challenge it in the courts; they have tried that and will continue to try it, but so far it's a non-starter.

Those are all legal and justifiable ways to repeal or get rid of Obamacare - again, I wouldn't like any of them, but I could understand them. The shitty thing about living in a democracy is that sometimes the other guys win. We had to take our lumps with the Bush Tax Cuts and the Iraq War; just part of the system.

But having tried all of the ways within the system, now they are going out of the system to hold the Government hostage and demand capitulation. Not compromise; capitulation.

So when you are debating your republican friends today, I'd give the following advice. Don't debate the merits of Obamacare; that's not the point. The point is that Republicans are holding the nation hostage in order to get what they want; their demands don't matter compared to their tactics. Hundreds of thousands of Government employees are wondering if they are going to be able to make their mortgate or put food on their table. Government services that people rely on won't be there or will be on skeletal status.

And if your friend suggests that Obama or the Senate compromise, you should punch them in the face.

and I would have to tax that person... that person would then have to file a 1090---but the IRS website is down due to the shutdown.

Once the IRS website is back up I ow you a punch in the face from a designated contractor.

That might be too much work.

Then again, I'm not part of some affinity group comprised almost entirely of Republicans so I don't need to cozy up to the right wing.

If you are, then that's going to color your outlook on things. And it will lead a person to claiming to have 'friends' they want to punch. To me, none of that is good stuff.

All I have said is that I am not surrounded by Republicans, sorry if that bothers you so deeply.

A) Learn what a joke is. That'll be hard for someone like you, but still probably would be worth it.

B) I get it - you are a puritanical liberal who enjoys looking down your nose at everybody who doesn't live up to your standards. You are a pharisee for our times. You don't really engage people or their arguments, you just pick at the edges, looking for ways in which they fail to come up to your puritanical standards and attack them on that.

I don't think DU needs any pharisees or puritans, but I'm only one person. I could be wrong.

You are calling me names for saying 'I am not part of an affinity group with Republicans'. Got ya. Have a nice whatever.

12. It's not name calling - it's describing you

I call you a liberal puritan, a liberal pharisee because you make statements that remind me of the pharisees and the puritans. You pick up on tiny points while ignoring the general thrust of the argument. In this case it's clear what my main point is; Republicans are reprehensible for shutting down the government. You probably agree with that.

I used humor to underline my disgust with Republicans - you, in a puritanical way, called me to task for that.

I have Republican friends. You don't. If that were all that was said I'd think it was a little odd (and puritanical) of you to underline that, but wouldn't make too much of a fuss about it. Instead you use the awkward phrase "affinity group." Why? Because from our previous conversations you know that I am religious and a Mormon, and you want to underline that if I were as liberally pure as you are I wouldn't chose to associate with any religion that wasn't 100% liberal.

Those are the acts of a puritan. You are a liberal puritan - someone who places purity (as you define it) above anything else. I say that not to call you names but simply to describe how you act.
