(19,066 posts)Your state might not be running the exchanges, but the federal government is. If your state didn't expand Medicare though and that's what you would have now qualified for, you're SOL. Although you can still see what you can afford on the exchanges.

(13,933 posts)All states have an exchange. If the state didn't do it itself, they have to use the federal one.
Some states refused to expand Medicaid, so fewer people in your state will qualify for that than would have otherwise.

(2,529 posts)Thank gawd my husband has TRICARE and I have the VA. Otherwise, with our health problems and medications that cost over $1,700 a month, we'd be royally screwed. But, we have relatives with conditions like diabetes, asthma and high BP without insurance that are royally screwed.

(13,776 posts)Realistically, the reason Medicare was enacted was that not only was healthcare insurance for the elderly very, very expensive, it was really NOT AVAILABLE to most seniors at any price.
I got into the nitty-gritty of it in 1962 and 1963 in high school when I had to debate it. My father was a surgeon and he was against it. So was I at the time because I only knew of the elderly whom he treated, not the much larger group that went untreated.
I was wrong then, and also later when I thought I was conservative Republican until I finally understood that they were against absolutely everything that I was for. Environment, equality, equal pay, right to choose, and religion out of government.
Finally I got wiser and changed to Independent in my late 30's. When I realized that I only voted for Democrats, I finally changed my party affiliation to Democratic.
A month sounds okay to me. Part A(hospital coverage) is free, but I wonder if that will change some day.

Good to hear you have coverage now.

(750 posts)One is state distributed, and one is national.
That means for one the state determines the expenditures.
The other is the national government.
According to the Kaiser foundation;
"The Medicaid program is administered by states within broad federal rules and is financed jointly by states and the federal government. Medicaids structure extensive state flexibility in program design and guaranteed federal matching funds have enabled the program to evolve, and to respond to economic and demographic changes and emergent needs. Its structure also facilitates state innovation."
Don't you just like that idea "State innovations"
For me being in Illinois a very corrupt state billions of dollars in
screwed up pension funding crimes nags our corrupt legislature for at least the forty years I watch. In a radio telecast just lately it was reported many very many states have ignored pension obligations
for years and some for decades.
All my life I have been paying into this stuff and now
at retirement time they have to pony up. I am part of the new
retirement crowd, boomer crowd, The new millennium retiree a very angry part, a very disappointed part. Actually ashamed of the American corporate social news media that is like a plague of misinformation.
I depended upon our news media to be responsible
to help understand the deep problems using their journalism skills
to weed out corruption yet they don't, worse this modern media brought America to where we are today. In misery mixed with hate
expressed daily by fear of a deliberate collapse of a government shut
down.
Always saying its happening, its happening over and over but not anything about why it is so wrong so un American such a breach of oath men the citizen vote for to even think stop the government to stop the service for the many but in certain times bail out with unknown amounts of money even secretly given to the few needs a new definition one that makes me so angry I can not think such men exist to call themselves part of society. I don't think they are...

(34 posts)is an EMT- they are screwing state employees left and right- not just on pensions, but cutbacks, no raises, unrealistic working demands etc- basically whatever they can come up with to make your state/fed employees life so awful they quit- It is not over yet- what is happening with the pensions is intentional- it was planned- now that they have drained most of the wealth for the working class thru the housing crisis- shifting all that money up to the one percent- they are going after the last bit of 'wealth' the working class has left- Pensions- good article on the 'plan' can be found here

(4,695 posts)valued below the poverty level. In 2013, the ACA made the new poverty level as much as 130% of the State's poverty level. Like in Texas, the TEA Legislature did not keep up with cost of living, annually reducing causing many of the poor to be dropped off from Medicaid. GOP/TEA-scummy Low-Life forms.
ACA also made it possible when applying for Medicare, you automatically can apply for Extra Help Paying for Medicine (both forms should be on the Medicare Web site). Then the Medicare Office sends the filled out and returned to them, medicine form to your State Medicaid Office. The State has a set time to get the paperwork done and send you a letter that you are approved. That means that State Medicaid pays your Medicare Premium and you get Medicare for FREE! Medicaid pays your co-pays too; the service does the paperwork by computer-ACA law that went into effect 2011. I just love Obamacare-Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Applying to the State for Medicaid your self may take a long time. Some states were putting holds on applications in 2010 saying that just could not handle to paperwork load (that was changed in 2011 by the ACA.) See why GOP hates it? Many people are below the poverty level now.

(2,674 posts)My disabled nephew is on Medicare and texas Medicaid used to pay his part b for $102 per month. Texas dropped him the first of the year and he just got a letter that they are reviewing paying his co pay for his medicine. He gets SS disability and losing that $102 per month was a blow. Now he will probably lose the co-pay for his medicine too. Way to go rick perry. If you are poor and disabled, Texas is not the place to be.

(15,540 posts)so you must mean Medicaid which is based on income.
We all need to learn to use the correct terminology and I don't mean that to be condescending. It's just that I hate it when people who don't really know something act like experts in something with such conviction that others believe them and then pass the meme along.
I was at a small neighborhood gathering one time and there is a couple in my neighborhood who both think they know everything about everything and they state what they "know" with such conviction that I see others believing what they're saying even though I know it's incorrect. For instance, they were informing everyone at the party that you didn't really have to go on Medicare when you're 65 and that you are automatically "signed up" without your approval and you have to call and tell them you don't want Medicare. I'm serious. I spoke up and said tactfully that that wasn't exactly true and the couple practically shouted me down so I gave up.
Anyway, my point is that we need to make sure we use the correct terminology. The same goes for Social Security. There's a lot of confusion between Social Security and SSI.

They make me sick. Luckily I'm 65 and have Medicare. The Colorado Exchange opens today. My husband and daughter will qualify for Medicaid. Praise the Democrats and President Obama. We will all be insured.

(15,540 posts)The couple I'm referring to barely graduated from high school and neither one of them is really that proficient at using a computer, though the husband can do the basics like send an email and they think they're qualified to give others advise on stuff like this.
I won't be 65 until 9 months from now, but until then I'll purchase a policy through our state exchange and apply for the subsidy which I'm sure I'll get a substantial one, since my income is not great.
I, too, am grateful to President Obama and the Democrats for this and let's not forget that I'm grateful to President FDR for his social programs too!
AND YES, TEABAGGERS, I WORK AND PAY TAXES!
Let's not forget the main reason more and more people are going to need this - the fact that we have become a "part-time employment economy". That needs to be hammered home. All the trickle down Reaganites thought business would be so altruistic and give us all jobs if we just deregulated, but that didn't happen. So now you have a huge contingent in this country who are piecing together two and three part time jobs with no benefits and their hopes of ever getting a full time job with benefits are dimming with each passing year.

(15,540 posts)I know a couple of compulsive liars (wish I hadn't) and they present their b.s. with such conviction and authority that people who are not savvy enough to be able to spot b.s. are taken in by it simply because of the confidence with which they state it. Compulsive lying and narcissistic personality disorder goes hand in and and narcissists cannot imagine they would ever be wrong. Add the corporate media to the mix of that and you have the nightmare we now live with.

(1,587 posts)I'm hoping I can finally qualify for Medicaid here in the nut bar state of NC. I can't seem to find an online application, only a PDF that I'll have to print and send in. Which wouldn't be so bad, except my printer is out of ink so I'll have to pay 10 cents a page to get it printed at the library. Sixteen pages, $1.60. Not a fortune, but I'll have to borrow even that little.
Crap. Going to keep looking for an online form.

And woe to those states with Republican governors who have dragged their feet and only reluctantly put out the necessary plan - usually through the federal government.
