I have friends who are non-essential federal employees and they will be furloughed.
I feel sorry for people who were about to finalize FHA mortgages or SBA loans.

(18,705 posts)This may be hopeful thinking.
I am thinking that the Republicans thought the Democrats would cave today.
The Democrats have caved time and time again.
I am hoping the Republicans just say hey we tried, and give up.
People in the background might pull the plug on this.

(18,705 posts)The people in charge of the Republican party, the money people might have something to say.
The tea party fools have gone to far now.
They are now messing with the real people in power.
I hope this will be over in a few days.

(115,677 posts)div class="excerpt"]UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:
The Employment Security Department said that it will continue paying unemployment benefits through this week, but said that it is uncertain whether officials would be able to maintain that if a federal shutdown lasted until next week.
WIC and Headstart will both be affected right away also. Some friends furloughed from gvt jobs too.

Also, VA: Extended shutdown could stop disability pay. Yep, that's me.

(6,682 posts)we don't know what will happen. We have 4 kids in college (2 kids/2 stepkids). He was furloughed and making less for a while, but his group got upgraded somehow and finally got back to full pay. Now, I don't know what will happen.

(86,636 posts)and in near-by communities will be seriously impacted, especially if it goes on for a long time... including me as I have been applying for federal jobs lately.
This is because the staple of income for the majority of the people I know are the millions of acres of public lands surrounding our tiny communities from YNP/TNP to the National Forests that surround them. A large portion of the locals work either for the Park Service or the Forest Service and a little further down the road the BLM. The there are the businesses who are part of the tourist hospitality and (food) service industries who weren't anticipating the closing of the parks for several weeks yet (they do this while the parks are waiting for snow and preparing the roads for oversnow travel). The workers are in trouble too since they will be cut out of five weeks of pay before a six week stint of joblessness until their employers reopen when the arks reopen. This sucks for most of us.
I have been looking for public sector work lately and that is all on hold until these clowns wise up or a change takes place - whichever comes first. Glad the food bank is a state entity!
I think that if this gang of thugs pulls this again in a couple weeks, there might be a general strike of the public with demands they really won't like... like leave our halls of government before we remove you physically Just pondering here but you never know at this point. You can only push a beleaguered people so far...

(2,165 posts)I'll start off tomorrow by coming in to work and completing furlough paperwork. Then I'll go home and wait to be recalled. In the meantime I'll probably worry a lot about how to pay the bills and keep food on the table. So that'll be fun. I'll probably spend some time talking to my co-workers who will also be at home worrying since they're all furloughed as well.
Should be a hoot...
