It's not quite dark yet. But the sun is down. And I'm at her door. She's not cutting me any slack
When I knocked, she shouted Who is it? so I told her through the door. When the door opened, I had repeated who I was and what organization I was representing
Yes, that's her. And yes, she knows the organization. And now I have an unspecified but obviously very limited amount of time to explain why I'm there
I offer her our endorsements for the primary. She accepts, somewhat dubiously, as I run through her voting options.
Will she vote? Yes
And will she be supporting our candidates? Absolutely
Would she like a yard sign for Mr X? Well, her sister promised to bring one but didn't, so yes
I'll have someone drop one by, I tell her
She thanks me

(118,285 posts)we've had the early voting period cut, for example, and Sunday early voting eliminated, and these are the last elections in which people can register at the same time they vote during the early voting period
Learning about some of this will make a buncha folks grumpy (since the early voting conveniences have been very popular) -- and IMO lotsa folks being grumpy at the legislature will be a good thing in 2014
Plus, there's a helluva lot more to learn about changes, and the potential impacts of those changes than I've indicated: I'm just scratching the surface. So getting volunteers up to speed is gonna take a lot of time and multiple contacts, and it's not too early to start gettin a few of the ideas across
The case won't zip thru the courts, and I don't know what our actual prospects are: voter ID doesn't actually kick in until 2016, but it would be better not to wait until we think we know how the suit will be resolved to start trying to get folk thinking about how to get IDs for those who may not have any. Regardless of what happens in court, there's gonna be confusion a-plenty in the Fall of 2016, just like always, and we're gonna be doin a whole lot of hard voter education work then: the only question is how much above and beyond our regular hard work we'll have to do. Better to have people start thinking NOW about Great Auntie Gertrude mebbe not havin a ID and how to get her one, than start worrying about it in late October 2016. Any possibility of confusion from a reversal by the court on that matter would, I think, be easily handled by the usual pre-election door-knocking: we always had to be prepared to warn people who had registered, without providing evidence of residency, that they needed take a utility bill or such to the polls with them the first time they voted
