Arizona Republican kills bill requiring $2,000 minimum college tuition payment

Source: Arizona Republic

The sponsor of a bill that would require Arizona undergraduate students at the three state universities to pay at least $2,000 a year out of pocket for their education has decided not to proceed with the legislation because of mounting opposition.

"I'm not pursuing it," Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said Friday. He has no plans to re-introduce the bill in another form this session or next year, he said.

Last month, House Bill 2675 was approved by a 7-6 vote of the House Appropriations Committee after more than 90 minutes of sometimes contentious debate between legislators and students.

Kavanagh maintains that giving away free university tuition in tough times is bad policy and can have negative consequences, such as contributing to high college-dropout rates.

Finland provides free public education up through Ph.D. No private schools; the emphasis on equity in education shows a commitment to democracy that is sorely lacking in our country.
