RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Supreme Court says the state attorney general has no authority to demand records related to a former University of Virginia climate researcher's work.
The court on Friday tossed out Kenneth Cuccinelli's so-called "civil investigative demand" for copies of Michael Mann's emails.
Cuccinelli, a global warming skeptic, says he's investigating whether Mann defrauded taxpayers by using manipulated data to obtain government grants. Other investigations, including one by the National Science Foundation, have found no wrongdoing by Mann.

(23,973 posts)Why aren't the Teabagger assholes in Virginia all up in arms over wasteful spending by their AG like this?
Hypocritical assholes, the lot of them. Not a peep from them.
Cuccinelli knew he had no standing whatsoever to file suit, yet he wasted TAXPAYER MONEY and filed suit anyway.

"The Cooch" is a hero to these people but this suit shows that he is at best nothing other than a glorious self promoter and, more likely, incompetent.
The Doctor.

(182,860 posts)Because the university is represented by the attorney general's office, U.Va. had to hire outside legal counsel to argue its case in Cuccinelli v. Rector and Visitors of University of Virginia.
So far the university has paid the legal firm Hogan Lovells $570,697.97, all of which came from private funds, said U.Va spokeswoman Carol Wood.
