As far as Wikipedia pranks go, this may be among the most outrageous weve seen.
Rolling Stone staffer Matt Taibbi slammed late conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart today, writing that he couldnt be happier that (Breitbart is) dead. Then, this afternoon, Taibbis Wikipedia page listed him as a piece of human excrement and his spouse as Vaseline and a sock. His profile snapshot features elephant droppings.
The Jane Dough captured a screenshot of the description, which is sure to change:

(17,600 posts)It could very well have been reverted by someone who isn't very happy herself with what Taibbi said.
Dedicated Wikipedia contributors take pride in keeping the articles reasonably neutral. That's part of why Wikipedia is so useful (although one should never reference it directly in a school paper, of course).

(30,885 posts)It's the kind of writing that allows one to see what's on the surface, or to see what's underneath. Freepers were ready for a battle with "libruls" yesterday. They just used Taibbi's piece as a convenient excuse, and by doing so, displayed their ignorance.

(33,599 posts)He did not say anything negative about Beerfart. You may agree with him, or feel it reflects badly on him.
But it's not like he said he was a worthless piece of scum the world is better without.

(5,601 posts)I am not outraged that his wikipage was vandalized. I am sure he expected it. A person is dead, no need to
grave dance.

(30,885 posts)That piece can be read one of two ways.
When you classify it as "stating hateful feelings," my immediate reaction is that you didn't actually read the piece, but there's also the possibility that you read it and saw what you wanted to see. It's not "gravedancing." You simply chose to see it that way.
And I'm not trying to start an argument with you...you're entitled to your opinion. Maybe Taibbi wasn't getting a dose of "karma." Maybe he simply triggered the ignorance that provided Breitbart with an audience in the first place.

(5,601 posts)dead the rest is immaterial. Taibbi doesn't care that his wiki page was defaced. He expected it.

(30,885 posts)Taibbi basically wrote an obit for Breitbart in his own voice.
And a lot of people didn't get it.

(30,885 posts)and other people didn't. It's that simple. Most of the people who were pissed off and / or offended by the piece didn;t understand what was being said. It's not always about the literal meaning of the words on the page. Writing isn't always context-free.
