His statement was one of the most vile things I ever heard.
This should not be allowed.

I did and they sent this canned response to me:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Popularity with American listeners plays an important part in determining whats on American Forces Network radio. Mr. Limbaughs show continues to be the number-one nationally distributed radio program in the United States. In that we reflect American radio, we include Mr. Limbaughs program in our schedule.
We do not censor content and we do not seek to protect our overseas Department of Defense audience from hearing views with which they may disagree. Our mission is to offer program choices, which includes both the one-hour versions and three-hour version of various popular political talk shows (i.e. Rush Limbaugh, Ed Schultz, Sean Hannity, etc).
To review our radio services/schedules, please visit www.myafn.net.
Thanks for your service, your support of the troops and for your interest in AFN."

What I am trying to not send as a reply.
The military has a high rate of rape. I wonder if hearing a show that de-huumanize women as prostitutes, sluts, whores, sextataries feeds into that mind set. I would think that the DoD would take these comments seriously. After your reply I can safely say, you do not. Protecting the sexist culture is your concern. Shame on you. Shame on you for deciding a man that calls women sluts for testifying before congress is merely an opposing view.

AFN conducts surveys to find out what the troops want.
Let us decide what entertainment we want instead of shutting out the naughty words that are too much for our sensitive souls.

(47,953 posts)Bullshit. I have no idea how such surveys are done but it doesn't matter. There are lots of things the troops have no say over, and this can be another one.
... that means no news, no commentary, no politics etc.. etc.. etc..
It's a ridiculous standard because what is good for the goose is good for the gander. When they remove one for being too far right, then it is free game for everything.
That leaves you with bland and uninformative twaddle. Maybe you think that is better that them hearing something you disagree with hmm?

...to be implying that there is nothing that can be done about Limbaugh, and that it's up to his fans to decide.
That's absolute nonsense. He can be fired. His show can be canceled, and he wouldn't be the first asshole radio host to meet that fate, regardless of how much his fans like him.

(39,961 posts)doesn't mean freedom of consequences. If you provide terrible service and a terrible product, would you expect people to continue shopping at your business? No you wouldn't, so why do you expect there to not be a outcry when someone denigrates women?
Rush is going to lose on this one. I'm not normally one to write to manufacturers, but on this one? I did and so did MANY others. Republicans are going to lose votes on this one, too.

(17,600 posts)He just insulted a whole lot of women in the military.
He's the last person who should be on AFN.
If a holocaust denier had a popular radio show, should they be allowed on AFN?
... the majority of troops would want a holocaust denier? If so, you are mistaken.
My point is that it should be what they want and not what you want.
MH1
(17,600 posts)But hey, majority rules, right? Doesn't matter if the guy spews bigotry and fosters a rape culture, if 51% (or the right officers) choose the jerkwad to be on the radio, it's just a-ok?
Majority rules...
You nailed it...
You should know. In most areas overseas AFN radio is the sole station for english news and entertainment. They have to appeal to the majority of people to get the biggest bang for their buck.
Once Limbaugh becomes unappealing to the majority, I suspect he will be replaced. Also, he is not on every AFN radio station.
MH1

That is why I know where the decision should come from. I have faith that our Soldiers know what they want and the information that reaches them shouldn't run through a "naughty" filter. They are smarter than you seem to give them credit for.
If you feel strongly about it then I encourage you to get female Soldiers ( and males also) to write in their thoughts and feelings.
Cheers...

(13,776 posts)What you've been saying about what the majority wants makes a lot of sense, but at some point I think it's fair for the Armed Forces Network to decide that there's a certain baseline level of decency that they expect from their radio commentators, especially if the civilians in the countries where it's aired can tune in too. Most people here aren't saying that right-wing radio shouldn't be available (although I always thought so, since for many years I don't think there was anything offering an opposing viewpoint; if it's true that Ed Schultz is carried, I guess that ends my objection).
I really do see your point about giving the people what they want, but AFN radio is in a way a representative of the United States, funded by taxpayers, and I think we should be heard if enough of us ask for him to be removed. Goodness knows there are plenty of other conservative commentators to take his place.
You see my point but still feel that we aren't moral/smart enough to make the decisions that you would?
Please correct me if I have misunderstood.

(23,926 posts)I reject your claim that the grunts have the final say in who appears on AFN. Cronauer was immensely popular with his listeners, but he was shit-canned because the brass wanted it that way. And that's the same reason Pigboy remains on the air ... the brass and the suits want it that way. Majority rules? Are you fucking kidding me? We must have served in different armies.

I don't want my entertainment censored from either political direction based on what they think is best for me.
If he was unpopular he wouldn't be on. Additionally, he isn't on all AFN radio stations either.

(17,301 posts)From censoring letters to mass media, if you think the entertainment you are receiving is NOT censored, then you are not being realistic.
Should Tokyo Rose's comments have been broadcast through out the military?
Should the Nazi's propaganda have been fed to the WWII troops?
Popularity has nothing to do with it. If a person is advocating actions that are dangerous to the mission then yes they have been and they will continue to be censored.
The question arises is how dangerous are Limpball's comments to the mission, not to the troops, not to the political opinion of some bonehead. The morale and welfare of the troops is an important ingredient to the success of the mission. Denigrating women may not be in the best interest of the success of the mission being attempted by a group that is composed of both men and women. It could cause in fighting and other problems.
It has nothing to do with "bad" words or protecting the troops from stupid ideas. It has to do with completing the mission as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Subject/In Regards: Rush Limbaugh radio
User Comment/Question:
It has come to my attention that AFN plays the Rush Limbaugh radio show for our soldiers. How can that be? Limbaugh's caustic, insidiously unpatriotic, rightwing hate speech should be banned from the public square. I ask AFN to do the right thing here.

Access to uncivilized, angry and divisive political discussion is not in the best interests of the United States' international image and should not be facilitated.
