Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis and her advisers have begun informing influential Democrats that she intends to run for governor in 2014, according to multiple sources familiar with Daviss conversations.
The Fort Worth legislator made a national name for herself in June when she mounted a filibuster against new proposed abortion clinic regulations. Texas Republicans ultimately passed those restrictions into law in a special session called by outgoing Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

(2,667 posts)because Elizabeth Warren is not the only person I'll donate to.
My housemates back in Dallas are holding a (one for starters) fundraiser for her at the house, and are networking with other Dallas Democrats to participate in more of them. Aimee Boone of the TDP and Matt Angle of the Lone Star Project will be involved with this as well, if anyone back home wants to help.

(37,748 posts)Battleground Texas is a movement I'm part of which is gaining a lot of momentum in the state, and wants Sen. Davis as our nominee for the governorship.
I think the main struggle will be two-fold. Getting voters out to the booths, and countering the GOP that TX is a solidly GOP state (it's a plaid, rather than a solid). Both are achievable, but the get-out-the-vote issue is becoming more difficult as Perry and Abbot are both doing everything they can to reduce voter eligibility in the state.
But rest assured, regardless of what the GOP chairs may advertise, TX *is in play* statewide in 2014 and nationally in 2016.

(9,314 posts)the right to vote. It is linked to a 1993 voting rights act. Not that I think Republicans in Texas would try to disenfranchise potential Democratic voters ... but I thought I would mention this thread to you in case you missed it.

(37,748 posts)I did see it, though I didn't know prior to reading it that the act also registers applicants to vote. Thanks for the heads-up!

(36,974 posts)Wendy Davis to announce gubernatorial decision Oct. 3
Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram
After weeks of pondering which office to seek, Fort Worth Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis will announce on Oct. 3 whether shes running for governor.
Theres one question Ive gotten quite often in the past few months, Davis wrote in an email to supporters. Whats next?
On Oct. 3, Ill be answering that question, she wrote. I truly appreciate all the work that you my grassroots team have done for me thus far. And Im excited about what we can do together in the future.
The question at hand is whether she will run for re-election in Senate District 10 or for governor.

(30,058 posts)Heard lots of good things about Wendy Davis. The GOP machine will have their candidate running but the Democrats will have to GOTV. Harris county went with lots of Democrat votes in the last two elections and we ha e the largest city in Texas. I learned. The last election the oriental, Latino and lots of the middle eastern population are voting Democratic, let's get Wendy elected.

(813 posts)I admire her for having the guts to run in one of the most right-wing states in the country.
My concern is: outside of Austin (one of the more enlightened areas of the Lone Star State), does she stand a chance?
I've never lived in Texas; the longest I ever spent there was at Air Force Basic Training at Lackland AFB many, many moons ago (and you don't get much of a view of the state in that environment!). What I know is probably second-hand knowledge...but my image of Texas is the state that elected George W. Bush and Rick Perry, where you better not mess with MY GUNS, and wears its "distinction" of the highest number of uninsured in the country almost like a badge of honour.
I hope I'm wrong.
I also hope that she's about more than just the issue of choice. I hope she's not a product of the DLC/"Third Way" BS.
I've got really cynical about many of the "rising stars" in the Democratic Party since the Clinton Administration.
