This is what it takes.

I've been emailing Limbaugh sponsors. Here is a back and forth I had with one of them:

Me:
"Customer Comments: Rush Limbaugh. The man was an abomination before today but today he went too far. Demanding sex videos of a George Washington Law School student who was only exercising her 1st Amendment rights was way beyond the pale. Please cancel your sponsorship of this man's show. I and every woman I know will be watching.> "

Them:
"Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We would like to assure you that we do not endorse the views expressed by Rush LImbaugh. We understand your concerns and we will ensure that your feedback is communicated to the producers of that show. We appreciate your feedback as it allows us to more effectively manage our relationships with our advertising partners. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are available to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week and we look forward to serving you.> "

Me:
"I think you may have missed my point. I am not interested in what you do with respect to the producers of Limbaugh's show...I am interested in what your company does. The producers of his shows have obviously condoned his obscene comments about women...I want to let you know that if your company continues to financially support him I will do all I can to see to it that women do not financially support your company."

Them:
"Again, We would like to assure you that we do not endorse the views expressed by Rush LImbaugh. We are currently reevaluating our marketing strategies."

Like pulling teeth!

A lot of these companies buy radio time in bulk...getting on thousands of stations for cheap rates. They usually pay ahead of time for those low rates and thus to "pull" the ads means losing money since most of these spots are sold as "non-cancellable". Thus they will "re-evaluate" for their next contract that could be months from now...long after all the noise has died down.

Sadly rushbo is a very known commodity in the advertising world and those who are on his show want to be there. They know his politics and a good number share his bubbleworld of hatred...the outrages like this only demonstrate to them how "effective" he is and they'll stand with him.

I e-mailed back saying it wasn't enough to discuss this with his producers. If they continue to support what he says, I will let my family and friends know they support what he says by their dollars.

As the mother of a daughter and the grandmother of twin girls, I really appreciate any and all who are pushing back on this issue. The events of the past few weeks have caused me to think back and remember my college days, when birth control first became widely available. Young, unmarried women had to endure such harsh judgement if they sought birth control pills during those early days. I remember not having the courage to go through that ordeal and playing the scary odds as a result. Oh my, I thought those experiences were relegated to history and women would always be free to choose how to manage their reproductive options.

This all makes me very sad and very mad!

I am going to mention in my emails that women make at least 80% of the purchasing decisions for their households based upon market research. So it is an especially bad idea to advertise with a crude and especially hateful misogynist.

They may not agree with them but that's not the point.

They ENDORSE them by associating their product with his show.
