Christian Group: There's "Nothing More Christian" Than Cutting Food Stamps

http://www.alternet.org/food/christian-group-theres-nothing-more-christian-cutting-food-stamps

Former Ohio Secretary of State, Ken Blackwell has come under fire for expressing strong support for the Republican-controlled House’s recent vote to cut $39 billion from the federal food stamp programs over the next ten years.

Blackwell, affiliated with the Family Research Council which has been branded a hate-group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, labelled the move an “act of Christian compassion” and said welfare programs breed ‘dependency amongst the poor’, Christian Post reported.

Despite the fact that numerous churches and Christian groups have denounced plans to cut food stamps, Blackwell argued there was nothing more Christian than denying poor people food stamps.

However, Rev. Gary Cook of Bread for the World condemned the Republican plan:

"What churches do in terms of the kind of generous giving to poor, hungry people is amazing, but their work is worth $40 billion dollars annually, which is essentially equal to the annual cut Congress is proposing in food stamps,” he said.

to them on Judgment Day according to Matthew's Gospel:

‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

i always understood the whole point to 'the faith' was just that

feed the hungry

clothe the naked

care for the widow and orphan

reach out to the prisoner

etc.

it wasn't hard.

but now.. i can't keep up with these talibangelicals.
there's a new twist to the faith every week.
