General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust when I truly thought ODS was complete BS, my cousin comes out as a birther
He is relentlessly messaging me that the long form birth certificate was doctored. This was by far my closest relative growing up. He is a measured and gregarious guy who had a lot of musical talent, but wound up being a mortgage broker. I would never have expected this from him.
I mean...how much does this horse have to be beaten before they will give it up?
And this time, I don't need any help debunking the birther story, but if I did, I would bet good money that people would insinuate shit anyway.
Sometimes, you are just damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

(10,291 posts)And, yep, this is new.
He's all "I know they doctored the long form bc".
I'm all "the state of Hawaii verified the document. There's newspaper announcements that have been archived, and I don't have my original bc. The doctor who delivered me has long since died. Does that render to document I got at the department of vital records up to someone else's purview? This is silly"
He's all 'it doesn't matter to *me*, I was just letting you know that *I* know documents and the pdf is altered. I can show you if you want.
I'm all, "Nope. Don't want. It doesn't effect anything one way or another"

(30,151 posts)Like folks who get a computer and find out, shit, I don't have to pay taxes! It was never ratified!
Or, you could take 100 people and have them read this website-
http://www.911truth.org/
3 of them would come away thinking they have "learned" something nobody else knows! I'm in the know! It's called truthy for a reason

(10,291 posts)but I was honestly accosted by this. *and* that he *really* thought that he had PROOF and he was gonna 'SHOW ME THE LIGHT"

(90,690 posts)I think it started while Obama was running for his first term as President, after he won and before he was sworn in. Cuz sent me every conceivable conspiracy theory -- it was sick. I think the last straw was some cockamamie thing about how no one in Hawai'i remembers any of Obama's family, especially him. I wasted time pulling up memoirs written by his classmates at Punahou -- then realized that it was a complete waste of time because my cousin had flipped his lid.
Fortunately, we were not close at all, so I felt only minor regret. I feel sorry for people such as yourself who lose someone they loved and shared a childhood with. It's sad.

(10,291 posts)This has really thrown me for a loop.
And even if his so called proof pans out, it changes NOTHING.
I have no idea why this issue is so important to them.
He even started out by asking me whether it would make a difference to me. Jesus. I could see it coming...

You can't fix stupid... they'll always latch on to something.

(10,291 posts)Otherwise they will pretend that it's the truth.
Al Gore never said he invented the internet. But no one stepped up and called those mother fuckers out on their inability to comprehend fifth grade English.

(11,441 posts)But who listens to that guy.
The Washington Post did:

And I imagine if I broadened the search, I'd find articles from many of those pesky Professional Left publications who did as well.
Yep, setting the record straight is good, for anyone who suffers "Any Democrat" Derangement Syndrome...

(16,846 posts)I guess I need to ask my mom why she's been lying to me all these years about where I was born. Maybe she thought I'd be President one day.
Hekate
(90,690 posts)I know she was born in Honolulu -- seeing as how I was present for the birth myself. Her replacement bc looks exactly like Obama's in its format, color, and type of info included or left out.
I have never lost mine -- I'm just better at hanging on to things. It's on that black paper/white ink stiff paper, and includes all the statistical info thought appropriate in California in the late 1940s: parents' occupations, race, age. My little footprint, doctor's signature.... Very thorough. It noted their marital status as well.
There's a lot of variation by state. In my living memory some thought it appropriate to give the newborn a big "Illegitimate" stamp on the bc if its parents had neglected a trip to the altar. Welcome to the world, ya little bastard, and have fun when your mom has to produce this to get you into kindergarten. Hopefully this practice has been "stamped" out.
If our house were to go up in smoke, gods forbid, would I suddenly lose every shred of my identity, or does it only matter if you're an African American presidential candidate? Any rational person knows the answer to that.
LaydeeBug
(10,291 posts)a replacement.
Oh, and my birth wasn't announced in the paper either.
Neither was my cousin's. We were baptized together and everything, and this is just crazy. Barack Obama has more proof that he was born in this country than I do OR than my cousin does.
Really.
Haters are gonna hate.

(12,022 posts)And they won't stop talking about Obama faking his attendance at Columbia.
Needless to say, we haven't invited them back.

(90,690 posts)It eats their brains. The occasional random encounter doesn't bother me too much because I just start blathering about my home state and how small it is and how everybody knows everybody (instead of 6 degrees of separation there's at most two) until their eyes cross and they go away. They're not convinced, but at least they're gone.
It's the cousin who started spamming me, and kept it up even when I told him to stop... It's symptomatic of a larger problem. Nothing I could say -- nothing at all -- got through the madness, and every week it was something else. Ew.

(10,291 posts)like Rick Warren on day one (and no that was NOT fucking necessary) or Healthcare (we all know that could have gone much MUCH better) but then there's twisting into a logic pretzel to make him the scapegoat of every ill and it is *CRAZY*.
Like really racist and crazy, and there is truly, honestly, call a fact a fact time to acknowledge that birtherism *really* is racism.
It is, and it's insidious to a proper discussion on civil discourse.

(14,524 posts)... how does you having a birther relative make ODS real?
I don't get the connection. Maybe "real" to Teabaggers and such, but it is BS in the way it's used to try and silence people on this forum.
LaydeeBug
(10,291 posts)really. I am certainly not saying this is an excuse for rogue troll accusations, because it's not.
But just when I thought it was complete bullshit, this happens.
And birthers are deranged. There's just no getting around it.
