PPP: Obama doing well in Wisconsin and beyond

Obama doing well in Wisconsin and beyond

There might not be any state that better represents Barack Obama's improved fortunes in the opening months of 2012 than Wisconsin. When we polled there in late October Obama's approval was a 44/51 spread and he led Mitt Romney by only 3 points at 46-43, representing a much closer race than the state had in 2008. Now those numbers have shifted significantly, with Obama's approval basically flipping to 52/44. And he now leads Romney 53-39, a 14 point margin that matches what he won against John McCain there.

Obama's 14 point lead in Wisconsin matches a trend we're seeing in both our national and state polling across the country right now: Obama/Romney is starting to look more and more like Obama/McCain, or even something more friendly to the President. Here's the breakdown on all of our Obama/Romney polls from 2012 and how they compare to the 2008 results:

<...>

In 5 out of 10 places we've polled so far in 2012 Obama's standing matches his 2008 performance, in 4 of them it's better, and in only 1 is it worse. I fully expect Romney's numbers to see some improvement if/when he wins the nomination but for now things are shaping up pretty favorably for the President.

Part of Obama's increased lead over Romney in Wisconsin is due to his own approval numbers improving. But it's also because Romney's numbers are headed decidedly in the wrong direction. Only 25% of voters in the one time swing state now have a favorable opinion of him, to 61% with a negative one. Since October his net favorability has dropped by 18 points with Democrats, 16 points with Republicans, and 12 points with independents.

Obama Up On Republican Field in Wisconsin; Santorum Leading with Republican Primary Voters

Raleigh, N.C. – President Obama’s numbers have rebounded sharply in Wisconsin since the last time PPP polled there in October 2011. Obama now has a +8 job approval rating, with 52% of voters approving and 44% disapproving. In October 2011 his numbers were almost the reverse at 44/51. Obama leads all his Republican challengers, most by double digits: he leads Mitt Romney by 14 points, 53-39 (in October he led Romney by just 3 points, 46-43); he leads Newt Gingrich by 18 points, 55-37; and he leads Ron Paul by 16 points, 53-37. Rick Santorum performs best against the President - Obama leads him 49-43.

The only state PPP polled that has shifted to the right is WA, and that was from +17 to +15, which really is insignificant and well within the margin of error. Obama really hasn't lost much support among most groups. He's polling at similar numbers as he did in '08 with African Americans and Latinos. His numbers with women will undoubtedly rise with the way the GOP is acting recently. I haven't seen numbers on youth voters and it will be important to get them out at similar numbers as last time, though the group is pretty unreliable.

While I'm sure this election will be closer than the last one, Obama is in good shape at this point. The real question is gas prices throughout the summer and the inflationary effect it has on the economy. Hopefully GOP talking points regarding domestic drilling won't work but if gas is anywhere near $5/gal they may resonate with people.

While he has a long way to go, it's certainly better being up at this point than trailing. And the GOP keeps shooting itself with the foot, seemingly unaware of its own self destruction. I really have to wonder. Other than religious extremists and old bitter white guys, who they think they're appealing to anymore?

That can only help keep Wisconsin blue, too. The governor's recall is under way, and we have not forgotten last year and are still mad.
