Breitbart was a propagandist and a flamethrower who definitely hurt people. I have no sympathy with him. However, he was not Hitler. And even if he was, should we wish for his death?
We are progressives. Many of us don't even believe in the death penalty for heinous, violent criminals.
Yes, we are better than Breitbart and better than "conservatives." Let's start acting like it.

(52,277 posts)but for breitbart, i'm willing to make an exception.
actually, much of an exception as i take no glee in his death, nor do i lack sympathy for his family.
i do, however, want to make sure he is remembered properly.
was he hitler? of course not.
but goebbels? i'm not so sure.
he propagandized lie after lie to the detriment of hard-working and decent people and institutions.
let's just hope against hope that they decide to honor him by not replacing him.

(23,664 posts)To tell you the truth the only time I even thought about him was when I saw him on TV.
Nevertheless he was a vile and repulsive human being who deliberately harmed innocent people and appeared to take joy in doing so. All you have to do is read his tweets at the time of Sen. Kennedy's death to understand what he was.
So while I'm not turning cartwheels because he croaked, I'd have to say that the world is definitely a better place with him no longer in it. And I apologize to nobody for that opinion.

(67,816 posts)Many are glad he's gone. He's gone because he's dead.
No one wished for his death. But no one should have to reticent to say what they feel, either.
The last time I thought about him was that rant at OWS.
The next time I thought of him was today, when I read of his death. I am glad he's gone. He's gone because he's dead. So be it.
The request in the title of this post wasn't rhetorical.

Plus, over the past decade whenever I've been/seen the most vicious flaming here at a discussion (OPINION) board, OVER OPINIONS, I have often wondered where all the kind threads pleading for civility are.

(6,670 posts)So he's not Hitler. He could have gassed THREE million Jews and he STILL wouldn't be Hitler. Hell, he could have gassed FIFTY million Jews and a billion Chinese and he STILL wouldn't be Hitler. So what? Is someone asserting that Hitler has returned from the dead?
He's responsible for enough deaths that I would have been willing to set my own beliefs aside and let the country execute him if they wished, whereas I wouldn't for someone who merely loses their temper and kills someone.
After I get through expending my compassion on all the people who are NOT harming others for a living, and all the cats, dogs, raccoons, bears, birds, rats, voles, amphibians, frogs, snakes, lizards, insects, lichens, fungi, bacteria, and other creatures that contribute to my life on this planet, I just don't have that much compassion left for him. About the equal of a guinea worm. Should I wish for the death of a guinea worm? Should I care if I kill one while digging it out of my body?
As long as our numbers are lower than these...

...then we're still better than they are. When our incidents outnumber theirs, I will start to worry, I promise.

(17,090 posts)Many of us don't feel any (and I would put myself in that group). Still, that's different than being gleeful that he died. Again, not accusing you of that.
Actually, I would prefer to just ignore this story and keep my thoughts about it private. But I gave in to the temptation of trying to encourage everyone to remember their progressive ideals. Most of us have them, although some of us (myself included) don't always live up to them in the heat of the moment.

(9,186 posts)Just becaused he died does not mean we forget and forgive the crap this low life pulled.
When they stop flinging shit in the most vile and disrespectful fashion and have meaningful debate and dialogue, we will.
Until then, Breitbart's passing gets the same amount of sympathy and compassion he gave to Kennedy.
