As Oil Thieves Bleed Nigeria, Report Says, Officials Profit
DAKAR, Senegal — Oil is being stolen on an “industrial scale” in Nigeria, the world’s 13th largest producer, and the country’s politicians and security officials are among those profiting, according to a new report from a prominent British research group.

They may be corrupt, but at least they're Nigerians. I suspect the larger oil theft is BP or another one of the oil monsters that roam the earth unopposed. This industry must be reined in.

... which led me to the impression that much of this stealing is due to the horrible conduct of western oil companies. This is not a "justified revenge" argument. Rather, it is the fact that oil companies do not clean up used sites (wells, equipment) that is driving large scale off-the-books drilling.

"The meak shall inherit the earth, but not its mineral rights"... Seems like the people that actually own the oil (regular Nigerians) are getting shafted twice.

The article is very interesting in that it covers many different types of theft, not just the one I illustrated in this post.
