Big Banks Start Campaign to Destroy Credit Unionshttp://www.donttaxmycreditunion.org/big-banks-start-campaign-to-destroy-credit-unions/
"SNIP.............................
The Move Your Money project was born out of the Occupy Wall Street movement, which began in September 2011. The impetus was the announcement by Bank of America that they were going to impose a $5 dollar monthly fee for debit card users. On November 5, 2011, customers were to close their accounts at major banks and open new ones in community banks or in credit unions. Already infuriated by Wall Streets recklessness leading to the 2008 financial collapse, the idea caught on like wildfire across the nation.
The effort worked, and Bank of America abandoned the debit card fee plan.
For the months leading to November 5, 2011 and for several months after millions of customers closed their accounts at the major banks and transferred their deposits to smaller ones and credit unions. Since then, credit union membership has been steadily growing. As of March of this year, credit union membership has increased to more than 95 million members and they hold 6 percent of the financial assets of United States to the tune of $1 trillion dollars.
Now the major banks want to destroy them.

(58,389 posts)I wonder what part of "non-profit" do the banks not understand?
Credit unions work well for the people (members) if the banks want a piece of that action perhaps they should shift to non-profit status and quit gouging their customers in one form or another for every thin dime.
Thanks for the thread, applegrove.

(19,497 posts)When the banks were bailed out it did more than just steal our money to prop-up people who stole our money. It told the banks that not only would they not face the legal consequences of their actions but that the government would protect their private enterprises at the expense of other private enterprises.
The bailouts green-lighted this action.

(7,018 posts)cannot open accounts in their own names. Those who have accounts
with credit unions are mostly middle-class citizens, who don't have much.
Should we ask Elizabeth Warren if she could do something to stop the
banks from trying to destroy the credit unions?

(8,434 posts)But without more data it's really hard to tell how much of the population has money in unions and small banks.
How many of those "members" are businesses (from 1 person operations to large corps) as well.
More data is needed.

(12,618 posts)They could try and compete with them, you know, benefiting consumers? The way free market fundies always say will happen? Like offering discounts, better interest rates, less fees, you know, actually be creative and competitive like they always encourage us to be. You know, that competition and free market innovation that's supposed to be good for all of us?
But no, instead they're going to use under-handed tactics and destroy them. I wish I could say I was surprised.

(769 posts)STAY WITH THE CREDIT UNIONS despite being taxed because if its not going to benefit the Too Big To Fail Banks and instead, all of taxed credit union money goes straight to Federal, then so be it. Many of our friends are saying the same thing. We'll never go back to Bank of America, ever.

(5,397 posts)I went to the credit union to make a credit card payment. When the woman gave me my receipt, she had also included an application for a new credit card.
She had noticed that my APR was 10.9%. The new credit card was 7.9%. Does anybody see a bank doing that?
I'll keep my credit union, thanks.

Instead of banks deserting customers with their lousy service and fees, it would be nice to see the reverse - customers leaving banks in droves and turning to credit unions.

(14,881 posts)I've been with them since '84 and will never leave them. Never.
Years ago, I tried to deposit a check from a fellow employee for a service I'd provided. The rep at the window whispered to me that there were insufficient funds in the account, so she was going to pretend she didn't see what I just handed her so I could do what I "have to do," and slid the check back to me. Ha! Since I knew what time our direct deposit pay arrived, I was first in line cashing that check on payday!
When my account was down to $5.00, they left it open for years without a single fee or charge. That's all it takes to maintain your membership -- $5.00 in your savings account.
When my checkbook was stolen 18 months ago, because I'd been with them so long they waived the stop payment fees on a large block of checks.
When the creepy dude at the post office returned my replacement credit card because both my street and PO addresses were on the mailing envelope, the rep I spoke with noticed that I was again having my paycheck direct deposited. Since I was also ordering replacement checks while getting a new card sent via fedex, she got permission to bump me back up to platinum status so my replacement checks would be free again. That saved me more than the fedex charge for the credit card.
I love Digital Credit Union. They are the best. They have stood by me for nearly 30 years; I stand by them.

(2,561 posts)Banks pay about 0.1 percent interest on customers deposits and charge 4 percent to 14 percent interest on loans using those same deposits.
At those rates, the bank is getting 40 to 140 times return on that money (0.04 /0.001 to 0.14/0.001).
The rate of inflation is higher than 0.1 percent so that anyone who keeps money in interest bearing accounts in a bank is losing principal just by putting money in a bank.
The banks are effectively getting to use your money for free.
If your bank charges user fees on transactions, then, in effect, you are paying the bank to keep your money there.
The artificially low interest rates are set by the Federal Reserve which is effectively controlled by the biggest banks. The Fed serves to maximize bank and corporate profits while transferring middle class assets to Wall Street. All done legally.

(18,219 posts)this could get really ugly. First it was the credit unions, then it was the charities, then it was the churches.
It seems to me that this easily could snowball....or maybe it should snowball. If they take the tax benefit for non-profit member-owned credit unions away, it only makes sense that the sacred cows will have to be slaughtered as well.

All one has to do is remember the whole S & L scandal to see where this is going.
As was stated up-thread, if they want our business, they should compete for it by offering more attractive service and products, not try to leverage government to subsidize themselves.
