Liberal Christians say because they don't want to admit to the evil done in the name of Christianity by their fellow followers. I'm not about to sooth their feelings with the Real Christian (tm) excuse.
It's a cop out.
And frankly, a great deal of Christians have the TeaHadist mentality

the GOP isn't the "Christian" party. Their actions have proven that repeatedly. They are TeaHadists. They won't be happy until our country looks an awful lot like extremist Muslim countries, i.e. the Taliban.

Christians have done and continue to do nasty things because of their religion. Liberal Christians need to own up to that fact.

They are extremists, just like some Muslims are extremists... IMO, that is more cult than faith. The big problem with the right and their religious extremists is those that don't subscribe to their extremist beliefs allow them to co-opt the word "Christianity". Their brand of "Christianity" isn't what was intended (if you believe in that sort of thing). For example, if Jesus came back today, they'd call him a dirty hippy, socialist and be done with it. They cherry pick what they want to believe and damn the rest. That isn't Christianity.
