I know it's hard to believe but once again, Congress is trying to cut food assistance. Today I'm asking you to make a QUICK call to voice your opposition to this. This is so important -- your Reps need to hear from your on this.
Call toll-free: 866-456-8824 --> listen to the recorded message and enter your zip code. You'll be connected right to your Rep's office. Let them know you're a constituent; tell them your name and the town you are calling from.
Tell them:
What's bad about this bill?
-- It would end benefits for a WHOLE FAMILY if a parent is not working at least 20 hours per week, even if her/his child is only one year old -- this is simply cruel with our high unemployment.
-- LASTLY, the bill REWARDS states for cutting off families - the state gets 50 percent of the reduced costs. Hundreds of thousands of children will lose free school meals.
That is all -- Please, no Hunger Games for America. We apparently have money to fight wars. Let's also take care of our people.

(20,958 posts)for those weeks we spend on Syria, we lost precious time as Congress getting back to DC from recess. that's a critical time to frame priorities for the session that was lost to kabuki theater.
but!
back to work, now!

everyone's story is different, but we all share the experience of being very fragile economically. this little bit of help kept us "okay" enough to get over the hump. without it we would have sunk.

(1,560 posts)Unfortunately the program is set for automatic cuts in November due to an expiring provision in the Stimulus bill. So in essence the GOP wants to let that expansion lapse and cut even more from family dinner tables. Pure Assholes.

(20,958 posts)the really ugly thing here is that they're incentivizing states to cut more people off -- this is going to put a huge burden on cities and municipalities to care for hungry people who're already on the streets.

(1,560 posts)The SNAP program desperately needs to be expanded, but unless we get a Democratic House back in congress, that isn't even in the cards.

(20,958 posts)also, since it's stopping a bad bill -- that's easier than putting forward a good one when we're in the minority.

(13,058 posts)I tried two more times and had the same result. I hope this means that they are getting so many calls that their system is being overloaded. So anyway I looked up my rep's phone number and called his office manually. It's not that it will do any good because he is a Teapartier, but at least I tried. I must say though that the staff member I talked to was polite.

YAY! and thank you for going the extra distance! i find congressional aides to always be amazingly polite and helpful. even in the offices you wouldn't expect.
