Taxpayers’ Lament: Government will pay windmill owners to “not” produce energy

There’s a province in Canada that’s one among several with on-going issues to do with wind farms. Industrial wind turbines (IWT). These IWT can have towers 55 storeys high with blades that sweep a 2-acre area.

As with any controversy and particularly ones involving government, some say there are pros and some say there are cons to turbines. The papers are full of arguments ranging from they are green, to they cause health damage, kill birds and bats; or there’s no way to store the energy they produce and so they are not efficient.

Whatever the answer, the Ontario government is now saying: if you have one we’ll give you taxpayers’ money to not use it.

Here are some factoids for the taxpayers:

Ontario has had a surplus of electricity since 2006
consumer pays a certain amount per kilowatt hour of electricity they use
wind producers earn up to four times that amount, with the taxpayers paying the difference
Ontario has signed generous contracts with wind producers for about 5,800 megawatts of electricity, only about 1,500 of which is connected to the grid.
