The Movie That’s Too Gay For Russia

Les Chansons D’Amour, a 2007 French musical, contains “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations,” Russian officials say. A TV station that aired the film has been warned the airing violates the country’s anti-LGBT propaganda law.

WASHINGTON — The Russian government took its first action against a media company under its new law banning LGBT “propaganda,” warning a television station that its airing of a movie with gay themes violates the law.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Russia’s federal media oversight body, Roskomnadzor, on Thursday warned popular movie channel EvroKino after it aired 2007 French musical Les Chansons d’Amour (Love Songs).

The agency said the film contains “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.”

Most of that can be blamed on the superstitious, ignorant, authoritarian Russian Orthodox Church. Peter the Great had to fight them hundreds of years ago when he tried to modernize the country. All the men wore beards in Russia back then, and when he began to require the men in the army to shave, he had to face the anger of the church. He was a particularly powerful czar, and a physically imposing man, so his will was carried out, but one wonders how successful a weaker czar might have been.

It's amazing to me that the ROC has gained back so much of the power it lost when the communists were in power. All that time, the party was officially atheist, yet the people were more than happy to let the church become powerful again after the fall of communism. That tells you how ingrained the church is in their culture. I don't have much hope for attitudes to change much in Russia any time soon. I think it's important that we and the Europeans keep up the pressure on Russia to liberalize. If we leave it to the ROC to see the light, we'll be waiting for centuries.

blind faith in any religious teaching. My mother & step father did and even as a young teen I knew that was ignorant. Must have got that from my natural father's genes cause I sure didn't get it from my mom.

devoutly religious. My parents are both religious, but not all of my family are. I'm glad I had some people I could talk to who told me not to take any of it too seriously. My niece had questions about a lot of it, and I told her the same thing. She hasn't mentioned it anymore.
