Good cop/bad cop scenario?

It strikes me that the Republicans who want war (McCain, etc.) who are calling Obama weak now that he's giving peace a chance, are setting up a scenario in which Obama gets to be the good cop (pro-peace) while the other side is the bad cop (pro-war). Assad may see Obama as sincerely wanting a peaceful outcome, yet they can't assume he'll be a pushover in this because of all the pressure and pro-war squawking coming (mainly) from the right. It could be a situation that works out very well, ironically enough, because of the Republican's knee-jerk reaction to claim everything Obama does is wrong. Just a thought.
