That's good. That's the winner. Who wrote it?
Me.
Uh huh well thanks.

(42,770 posts)of it. Is it good? duh.
I just learned the other day not to use anything but 100% agave for margaritas. Had never heard that

something to do with Bart Simpson so I immediately ignored it every time I
saw it.
So sad I missed all those years of anti-Bush satire. I could always hold my
own in the Bush hating department !!

(6,699 posts)It could be, but I heard different from a learned Mexican guide who has had extensive experience on agave farms. (not sure that's the right term, but to continue....) 100% agave is the best, most smooth tequila, and is very sought after by connoisseurs of liquor. But to make a margarita, he claims it is best to use something equivalent to Jose Quervo Gold; as it is 30% agave, but 70% made from sugar cane. Since a mixed drink, a margarita as we are talking about, is typically made with some sweetness added to it, the 100% agave is lost in the drink and the Jose Quervo actually mixes better, since it is made from 70% sugar cane.
I might have some of the story mixed up a bit, but that was the gist of it. I LOVE tequila. I've had maybe 20-40 different makes, and I wouldn't waste my time drinking Jose Quervo Gold straight up, with a lime and salt. But when it comes to the 100% agaves; it's the only way to drink it....straight up.
Some folks also toss Grand Marnier in their margaritas, but again, that's a waste of good liquor in a drink buried with sours and sweets. I love it on the rocks; but I'll never order another margarita with Grand Marnier; instead I'll just leave it to Controy or Triple Sec.
Just an opposing view. Something to consider.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)therefore wouldn't make you as sick from drinking it ? Plus...no bottled mixes - only fresh squeezed citrus - mostly limes but a splash of grapefruit and orange.
My two fav tequila is Hornitos - just because of the earthiness.
What are your tops?

1. If it isn't (a) 100% blue agave; and (b) from the Mexican state of Jalisco, then it isn't Tequila.
2. There are basically three types of tequila, only one of which is traditional: blanco, reposado, and anejo. The latter two were developed in the last few decades by distillers who started aging the traditional blanco in used, oaken bourbon barrels--it is the corn sugars in the casks that give the tequila its golden color; the aging adds smoothness.
3. The best margaritas are made with a good quality BLANCO tequila (1 part), Triple Sec or Controy (3/4 part) and fresh lime juice (1 part), on the rocks, with salt. It is tart but not sour, and very refreshing. As you mentioned, a fine, smooth reposado or anejo would be lost here, and Grand Marnier overwhelmed. Good blanco tequilas available North of the Border would be Herradura or Milagro or Don Julio. You may occasionally see a "Silver" tequila; those are generally a better quality, sipping tequila.
4. I wouldn't touch Cuervo Gold with a ten-foot pole, most especially because I don't care for hangovers.
5. My favorite sipping variety is not blanco, not silver (or reposado or anejo), but "crystal"--Don Julio Setente, a 70-year-old blanco. But I doubt if you will find that outside Mexico.
*I feel qualified to comment since I live in Jalisco--some 35 miles from the village of Tequila--and drink far too much of it.

For his final New Rule of the night, Bill Maher returned to Syria and this week's 12th anniversary of 9/11. With the country on the verge of bombing another Muslim country, Maher said, "America must stop asking, "Why do they hate us?'" "We're starting to look not so much like the world's policeman, but more like George Zimmerman," he explained. "Itching to use force and then pretending it's because we had no choice." As much as he hates chemical weapons, Maher said, "We have to stop bombing Muslim countries if we ever want to feel safe from terrorism in our own."
"How did we inherit this moral obligation to bring justice to the world via death from above?" Maher asked. "It doesn't make any sense. Our schools are crumbling and we want to teach everyone else a lesson."
Subtly mocking the entertainment industry's typical peacenik stance, Maher said, "I am no fan of Assad, and I say that openly. I don't care if it costs me jobs in Hollywood." He also made fun of America's tendency to "muse out loud" about who we're going to bomb. "People in other countries don't talk like this. Probably because if they did, we'd bomb them!"
He ended his closing rant by remembering the time, just after September 11th, 2001, when he sat down with Howard Stern, who suggested bombing any Muslim country at random. "And I remember thinking to myself, 'Really? Bomb any Muslim country? That's the policy? Just get a map of the Middle East and throw a dart at it?'"
"Well apparently George W. Bush was listening," he concluded, "because that's exactly what we did."

(53,661 posts)too true.
Every Republican who claimed they wanted Iraq due to Saddam's WMD should be all for this action against Syria, period. They have no other excuse. It is merely because they cannot bring themselves to support even national security when there's a black guy in the Oval Office.

(5,275 posts)I would have liked to hear more Matt Taibbi and Bill Nye and less Michael Steele but still some good moments last night.
I sure share Nye's dismay at the rampant ignorance in places like Texas, so many people ignoring plain, clear evidence that the earth is not 5,000 years old, that "The Flintstones" was fiction, to get creationism added to Texas educational books. It's just stunning and it's scary since Texas is so big a lot of states just do what they do.
Too many people takes too many passages of the Bible literally - but of course they cherry pick it.
I'm quite apprehensive about where we're headed in the immediate future.
